"Who's the first?"
"Calls himself Zatham. Cut down half dozen cultists in the halls without breaking a sweat. He should be up on the parapets now. We'd be lucky to have you working together."
- Commander Kenton and the Shard-seeker(src)
Zatham is a mysterious adventurer that came to aid of Stormpoint when it was invaded by the Cult of Terror.
Biography[]
Early Life and Exile[]
Zatham is an Inari, and was once one of the Sanctifiers of Ancients' Cradle.
Over the years, the Inari gradually seized power on the island. Zatham accused the Elders of punishing misdeeds unevenly between Inari and Lilin. Events came to a head when Morwith — one of the Elders of the Lilin, stole the Pathstone and abandoned the island with other Lilin who shared her view. Ymuthrus became the island's new Prevailing Wind and ordered that any Lilin who had ever advocated fleeing the Cradle was to be executed. His edict shocked his fellow Inari, but only Zatham spoke out against it.[1]
For his 'crime', Ymuthrus insisted Zatham judged in the rite of Purity's Penance. It did not kill Zatham, but burned the eyes from his face. Ymuthrus then permitted him exile.[1]
The Bride[]
- Zatham to the Shard-seeker(src)
Angered by this betrayal, Zatham sought a means to get his vengeance — to bring destruction upon his once home. It has been an accepted fact amongst the residents of the Cradle that outsiders would bring destruction, so Zatham sought one that would help him achieve his goal. He later crossed paths with the Bride of Hell, and they came to an agreement — the shard, for the destruction of the Cradle.[2]
Terror's Tide[]
When the Cult of Terror was close to breaching the Stormpoint Battlement, Zatham came to the defenders aid, killing half dozen cultists without breaking a sweat. After they let him in, he asked the commander for a way into the Abandoned Prison. The commander refused, so Zatham began to plan a strategy to attack the cult and stop their advancement to the prison.[3]
Luckily, another adventurer came to Stormpoint's rescue, also looking for a way into the prison. Grateful for the assistance, he told the Shard-seeker to stop the cultists from advancing through the sea while he would go after their aerial reinforcement. After that, he jumped through a portal to go after the Howling Terror as it was flying by.[3]
Zatham met the Shard-seeker again in the Warden's office just after a sea behemoth captured a little girl in its rampage over its master's death. They chased the monster back to its lair. The girl's brother dived into the water to save her. Zatham told the Shard-seeker to distract the beast while he rescued the children. Unfortunately, the boy drowned before he could be saved.[4]
After rescuing them, they were attacked by cultists; which was a distraction for their leader to steal the Worldstone shard.[4]
Destruction's Wake[]
Returning Home[]
The Shard-seeker and Zatham pursued the Cult of Terror to Ancients' Cradle.[5] Zatham revealed to his companion that the island was once his home. Upon entering the island, they bore witness to the affliction that had ravaged the island, twisting many of its people, fauna and flora.[6]
They caught up to the Bride of Hell as she attempted to sync her shard to the Fire of Life using one of the obelisks scattered around the island. Luckily, the Fire rejected her and killed the cultists accompanying her in the backlash. As they confronted the Bride, she taunted them and teleported away. When Zatham tried to inspect the obelisk, he was also rebuffed, and the Fire of Life reanimated and fused the corpses of the Cultists into a monstrosity in retaliation.[7]
After defeating the monster, Zatham and his companion confronted Rhyn (a Lilin Sanctifier that was captured by the Cultists). Zatham asked after his mother, as there were few more knowledgeable about the land than she. Rhyn didn't know where she was, but was able to cast a spell that would lead to her. Zatham asked his companion to find her.[8]
The Shard-seeker returned with Tarzoine (Rhyn's mother) and after a short exposition on the island, she directed them to the Elders'gathering place at the center of the island.[8] Their journey went with little problems, apart from a brief confrontation with the Bride of Hell and having to protect themselves from the agitated defenses of the island they arrived at the Exiles' Repose.[9]
The duo interrupted a meeting at the Exiles' Repose, and the Shard-seeker was bound by the Conservators. Zatham, unable to contain his fury, killed them and attacked Ymuthrus, but failed to kill him. Another elder called Geherit spoke for them.[9]
In-game[]
Zatham is an NPC in Diablo Immortal. He was introduced in the quest Unexpected Reinforcement, and accompanies the player for most of the quest line of Terror's Tide, Age of Falling Towers and Destruction's Wake. After betraying the player, he's the second boss of the quest Creation's Husk. He attacks with the following:
- A swipe of his sword.
- Slamming his sword which releases 3 Blade Beams.
- Summons 5 Terror Zealots.
- Summoning thunderbolts.
- A beam from his chest.
Personality and Traits[]
Zatham was originally a very upright man who stood against evil, even when it is done by the law. His banishment from Ancients' Cradle left a mark on him, and led him to become obsessed in his pursuit of vengeance (which he saw as "justice" for the unjust acts done to him).
His vengeance didn't dim his desire to uphold justice and wipe out evil. Even after agreeing to work with the Bride he still killed terror cultists whenever he saw them harming innocents. He couldn't bring himself to kill Geherit, who he saw as truly being a good person, and even planned to betray the Cult of Terror after their deal was completed.[2]
