"That is a name from an old story that I never dared believe to be true...the Wrathborne are a circle of ancient demon knights answerable only to the Lord of Terror himself. They sowed horror across the Burning Hells as they solidified Diablo's rule as the Dark Lord. But without the yoke of their master, it appears they have turned their eyes towards Sanctuary. If there is a way to stop them, you must use it, my friend."
- An adventurer and Deckard Cain(src)
The Wrathborne are an order of demonic knights, once sworn to Diablo.[1]
Lore[]
In ages past, the Wrathborne sowed horror across the Burning Hells as they solidified Diablo's rule. However, with the loss of their master, they turned their eyes towards Sanctuary. However, their entry into the mortal realm was held back by the Einfrinn Tree.[1]

The Wrathborne overrun Westmarch, as seen in the Einfrinn Tree's vision
In 1270, in a vision bestowed by the Einfrinn Tree to an adventurer, the Wrathborne invaded Westmarch, emerging from a portal via the tree, killing it in the process. In the vision, the city was set ablaze, and resistance crushed. Responding to the vision, Rayek and the adventurer began taking actions to fight the Wrathborne before they were ready. Chaos Herald Pyl was killed quickly and his remains used to power the Helliquary.[2]
While the glimpsed-at vision of the future was apparently averted,[3] the Wrathborne nevertheless launched a series of invasions against Sanctuary that same year.[4]
Eve of Unmaking[]

Gorgothra in the Ashen Ravine
C. 1273, most of the Wrathborne had resurrected in Hell. Lassal and two other demons led a vanguard force to invade the Lidwinter Woods.[5] At the latter part of the year Gorgothra, Vitaath and the Twin Terrors, led their own force to the Ashen Ravine.[6]
In-game[]
The Wrathborne appear in Diablo Immortal. They are fought in the "Opening the Helliquary" quest, and form the basis of the Wrathborne Invasion event. A number of Helliquary bosses are members of the Wrathborne.[4]

Trivia[]
- The Wrathborne is the only group of Helliquary bosses that was canonically defeated before they actually invaded Sanctuary.
- While it is not outright stated that the Wrathborne were thwarted in their future invasion of Westmarch, it can be assumed that this never occurred given the context of Diablo III where, among other things, the city was destroyed by the Reapers rather than the Wrathborne.
- It is unclear exactly when the Wrathborne struck out on their own. The "loss of Diablo's yoke" could refer to the events of the Dark Exile, or Diablo's defeat in Diablo II. Izilech's backstory indicates that the former is likely, given that he betrayed Diablo during the civil war in Hell.
