The Void is an endless[1] empty realm where individuals can be trapped.[2] The Void is described as being endless darkness, blacker than black and completely empty. In the view of Rathma, being cast into the Void is a fate worse than death.[2] Even depicting the Void can apparently drive people to madness[3] and corrode the environment,[4] but it is apparently possible to depict it in such a manner bereft of this baleful effect.[5] Many of the Taan believe that the void connects to other existences.[6]
Lilith was twice banished into the Void by Inarius, though escaped the first time.[2] Inarius also banished Rathma into the Void during the Sin War. Trag'Oul tried to retrieve him but he was too far out of Trag'Oul's reach, so he sent Mendeln in.[7]
Much later, the Void was depicted in the paintings of Vithu and Miray. Both of their paintings drove people to madness, caught in the sublimity of their feelings.[3] The two worked together, depicting the Void in new colors, but robbed of its power.[5] After being surpassed by his student, Vithu painted the void on the ceiling of Miray's cellar. By the time she returned, perfectly oval holes had been cut through the roof and floor of her home.[4]
