Vigo was a captain in the Knights Penitent.

Biography[]

As a member of the Cathedral of Light, Vigo often heard the priests going on about a prophecy and the return of Lilith. He had his doubts as to their claims.[2]

A Cold and Iron Faith[]

The Knight and the Magpie[]

"I know what I saw. She had horns like a beast. Strode right past where you stand. To think my mother's trapped in there with her! You let my mother through, sir, shouldn't you be responsible for her safety?"
"But, we have soldiers stationed inside who--"
"You should be worried about them, too!"

- Neyrelle pesters Vigo(src)

In 1336, Vigo was stationed at Yelesna. where he received word of the sighting of a horned demon in Gale Valley.[1] He performed a routine inspection, found nothing, and sent in a priest and escort of knights into the mines to investigate.[3] He wrote a report and sent it to Reverend Mother Prava in Kyovashad.[1]

Having reported the demon, Vigo continued with his gambling habits. In one might, he lost an entire month's wages. The next day, while on guard duty at the mines, he was approached by Vhenard (alongside another woman[4] and an escort of knights[5]) who gave him a wealth charm in exchange for entry. Vigo agreed, and when he gambled that night, found that the wealth charm apparently worked. The day after that, however, Vhenard's daughter, Neyrelle, arrived, pestering him about the demon sighting. He told her that he'd already reported it, but she refused to give up. He headed to mines, knowing that Neyrelle would break in if he wasn't on duty.[4]

Neyrelle pesters Vigo

Vigo's intuition was well founded; no sooner had he met a wanderer, Neyrelle turned up at the mine entrance, much to Vigo's annoyance. Neyrelle once again pestered him about her mother and the demon, Vigo responded that they had soldiers inside the mines. The Wanderer told Vigo that Prava had sent them (much to Vigo's fear), and that the demon Neyrelle spoke of was Lilith. Relenting, Vigo opened the mines, and the trio headed in. With the ore hoist stuck, they had to descend on foot. During the journey, Neyrelle spotted her mother's wealth charm on Vigo's wrist. Vigo explained that Neyrelle had given it to him, omitting that he'd taken it as a bribe.[6]

Because the hoist was stuck,[6] the trio had to make their way through a condemned section of the mines; a section that Prava had insisted no-one enter, though Vigo didn't know why. Vigo suggested that they return to Pine Hill to gather knights from the garrison, but Neyrelle refused, not wanting to leave her mother in Lilith's company any longer than necessary. After coming to a locked door, Neyrelle was able to crawl through a nearby hole to reach the other side, unlocking it, while Vigo and the Wanderer held off attacking monsters.[7] The trio made it through the mines, but with the mines collapsed behind them, and the ore hoist inoperative, Vigo lamented they were trapped. Heading deeper into the earth, they found themselves in the shadow of a buried civilization, one clearly not made by human hands.[8]

The trio find Grendan

Further down, they found the ore hoist; its gears had been jammed by a demon's corpse, hence why they weren't able to operate it further above. The Wanderer removed the corpse, allowing the hoist platform to descend, but Vigo noted that the demon had been killed by something, and wondered what had happened.[8] He concluded they needed reinforcements, but before they could discuss the matter, they heard a groan. Heading through the gate into the city, they found the corpses of the knights that had accompanied Lilith and Vhenard into the mines. One, Grendan, was still alive, however barely, and told Vigo that Lilith had slaughtered them (all save Lilith, who had followed the demon into the city after being spared). Grendan begged Vigo to tell the Cathedral what had happened before succumbing to his wounds.[5]

Vigo was aghast, in that not only had he trusted Vhenard, but that through his actions, his fellow knights were dead. Neyrelle wanted to press on, insisting her mother could still be saved, but Vigo refused, and departed the mines to head for Kor Valar.[5]

Pilgrimage[]

"I came clean to Prava about taking that woman's bribe. Eesh, it's looking bad. My ass is on the line. Might not have a job when she's done with me."

- Vigo to the Wanderer(src)

Vigo reunited with the Wanderer at Kor Valar

At Kor Valar, Vigo told Prava what had happened at the mines. Unimpressed, Prava dismissed him from the fortress keep, and many inside the fortress resented him for what he'd allowed to happen. He oversaw the cremation of his fellow knights that had perished at Lilith's hand, before reuniting with the Wanderer. The pair entered the keep together, where the Wanderer told Prava that they needed a divine blessing to pursue Lilith. Prava told the Wanderer to make a pilgrimage to Alabaster Monastery, and to this end, Vigo told the Wanderer to meet him at the ruins south of Kor Valar.[9]

The Wanderer finds Vigo in prayer

Vigo met with the Wanderer outside the College of Light. He instructed them on how to take the pilgrimage that would "cleanse" them for their meeting with Inarius. However, Vigo wouldn't take the pilgrimage himself, for in his mind, he wasn't ready for it. The Wanderer departed, and Vigo headed for the Shrine of the Penitent, where he prayed for his own salvation. However, he found none, and while he didn't consider himself a sinner, he was weighed down by the knights who were dead because he'd accepted Vhenard's bribe. It was here that he reunited with the Wanderer as they completed their pilgrimage. He wished them well, warning them that not everyone returned from a meeting with Inarius.[2]

Vigo returned to Kor Valar where he and Prava had a "good conversation." He agreed to do his penance,[10] which meant being sealed inside a suit of Penitent Armor and becoming a Dreadknight.[11]

Descent[]

Vigo assists the playing character in the battle with Lilith's Lament boss fight, ultimately dying due to the wounds inflicted by the armor.

Legacy[]

A sketch of Vigo by Lorath Nahr

At some point, Lorath Nahr heard of what had befallen Vigo. He wrote that the knight had been a gambler and a fool, and however unintentional, had played a role in the suffering Lilith inflicted. However, he also noted that to Vigo's credit, the realization of his error gave Vigo the drive he needed for redemption. Lorath speculated that Vigo believed that he died for his sins, but also believed that Vigo could have survived Lilith's Lament in standard armor rather than the Penitent Armor he wore. Yet if he had done so, would he have found redemption in life rather than in death?[12]

Lorath couldn't answer, and nor could the dead.[12]

In-game[]

Vigo-game

Vigo as he appears in-game

Vigo appears as an NPC in Diablo IV in Act I. He aids the player on two occasions.

The first is in the dungeon Condemned Mines, where he attacks with a sword and shield. He also has a Light-esque barrier ability that he can generate in front of him, negating any attacks that come its way.

The second is in the Lilith's Lament boss fight, where he wields Penitent Armor. He is able to generate a sphere barrier that the player must (or at least should) take cover under to avoid the boss's area-of-effect attacks. After his death, he drops Vigo's Protecting Amulet.

Beyond this, Vigo is found as the questline dictates, such as Kor Valar, the College of Light, and the Shrine of the Penitent.

Personality and Traits[]

"So I like playing cards. Doesn't make me a sinner. But that bribe...good soldiers died on account of what I did. Is that the kind of man I am? The kind I'll always be?"

- Vigo's reflections(src)

A gambler,[12] Vigo enjoyed playing cards, and wasn't particularly devout.[2] Lorath considered him to possibly be a fool, given how easily he was swayed by Vhenard and Lilith.[12] However, Vigo valued the lives of those under his command.[2]

  • It is implied that Vigo's fate of being sealed inside Penitent Armor was decided before he even went on the pilgrimage. If the player explores Kor Valar, they can find the suit being made ready even before Vigo and the Wanderer depart.
