"Yes, the leader of the Sand Scorpions, and our rival for these accursed dunes."
- Tabri and the Shard-seeker(src)
The overlord Vataos built a desert gang through imperial cruelty — raiding travelers, taxing cases, and establishing brutal labor camps throughout Shassar. Vataos first used the Sand Scorpions to enrich himself, but after his anointed successor deserted, he found a new aspiration: to rebuild Fahir's kingdom of death in his own image.[2]
Biography[]
Vataos was a cruel figure, leading through fear and intimidation. Those who refuse to follow his orders were killed.[3]

Vataos in Sereth Outpost
Over the years, Vataos had a reign of terror against Shassar's scattered people.[4] In 1270, the Shard-seeker searched for the Scepter of Fahir. Vataos dispatched his forces to take them from the outsiders, desiring the scepter for himself. Vataos led the Scorpions himself in an attack on Sereth Outpost, where he and Tabri met in single combat. She was able to wound him, but disappearing in a puff of smoke, Vataos escaped before she could deliver the killing blow.[5]
The Scepter of Fahir ended up in Tabri's hands, which made Vataos desperate. The Sand Scorpions began searching for a weapon to counter the scepter's power.[6] However, events played in the Scorpions' favor, as when the Amber Blades attacked, they drove them back, forcing the Blades to retreat into the Library of Zoltun Kulle. Inside, Tabri left the Blades to search for Vataos, and using a terminus, ended up in a realm beyond Sanctuary. However, Vataos followed her through the portal, engaging her in combat.

Vataos and Tabri fight to the end
Vataos was able to claim the scepter and wound Tabri, but was immediately confronted by the Shard-seeker, who defeated him and took the scepter. However, still alive, he attacked Tabri as she and the Shard-seeker sought to leave. He and Tabri remained locked in deadly embrace as the structure collapsed around them. Back in the Library of Zoltun Kulle, the terminus portal closed, leaving their fates unclear.[7]

Character portrait
Vataos appears in the "Fahir's Legacy" quest in Diablo Immortal. He is seen fighting Tabri as part of a scripted event, which the player cannot influence.
Vataos later appears as a boss, concluding the "Curse of the Scepter" elite quest. He is fought in an arena surrounded by portals, where the player can use them to hop from one side of the arena to the next. These can prove useful in evading his attacks, which are as follows:
- Sword swipe (melee, does significant damage)
- Sword swing (Vataos swings his sword around in a circle, dealing AoE damage)
- Daggers (Vataos throws out a number of daggers in an arc before him; he will usually jump back before sending them out, giving a small visual cue)
- Circled Explosives (Vataos detonates explosives around him in a circular AoE effect—each circle spreads out from him, and the closer the circle, the more damage the bombs do. It is highly recommended to use the portals to evade them, as they are hard to evade otherwise, with the player only having a few seconds to react)
- Directed Explosives (Vataos sends explosives out before him in a cone-arc, dealing AoE damage)
