Varshan the Consumed was the catalyst for the Malignant.[1]
Biography[]
Varshan was a priest of the Cathedral of Light, and the mentor of Cormond.[2] Based on his effects, Varshan lived humbly, and was devoted to his faith.[3][4]
Malignancy[]
In 1336, Lilith came to the Fractured Peaks town where the pair were at. Her words drove the people mad, turning them against the priests. Cormond begged Varshan to flee, but he refused to abandon his flock, and as such, Cormond left him behind. By the time Cormond returned, Varshan was the only one left in the village, and had been driven mad by Lilith.[2] Cormond found him in the church undercroft.[5]
To remove Lilith's corruption, Cormond used a Cage of Binding on him in an attempt to remove the corruption, but something went wrong. The corruption within Varshan burst out of him. Consumed his body and soul, and in so doing, turned him into the first Malignant.[2]
Varshan spread Malignancy to everyone he touched. He apparently had some level of intellect left, as he pursued Cormond to Orbei Monastery. He rampaged through the upper levels before crashing into the Hall of Records. Cormond fled, and Varshan battled the Wanderer. The Wanderer defeated Varshan, but when they used a Cage of Binding upon Varshan's heart, the cage exploded and Varshan escaped in wisp-like form.[2] The cage failed due to Varshan's power.[6]
Later, Varshan was summoned to the Velkhova Church undercroft through a ritual conducted by Cormond and the Wanderer. Like in Orbei, the Wanderer defeated Varshan. This time however, the Wanderer used a more advanced Cage of Binding, destroying Varshan's heart and ending his life. With Varshan's death, it marked the beginning of the end for the Malignant.[5]
Cormond continued to make Cages of Binding to help the remaining Malignant find peace. He believed Varshan would rest easier for it.[7]
