The Temple City of Travincal was the holy headquarters of the Church of Zakarum in Kurast. Its center was the Temple of Light, the holiest shrine of the Zakarum faith. From there the High Council of Zakarum, the priest caste and ruling body of Zakarum, directed its followers. It's connected to the Kurast Causeway and grants access to the last zone of Act III, the Durance of Hate.

Background

Some time after the Dark Exile, the Lord of Hatred, Mephisto was imprisoned within a soulstone. Under the watchful eye of the Horadrim Brotherhood, Mephisto was moved to a secure location - he was imprisoned beneath the Guardian Tower in Travincal, with the High Council acting as his jailors. However, Mephisto's corrupting influence soon spread.

One by one the pious priests fell under the sway of the Lord of Hatred - all but one. The Que-Hegan, a sage known as Khalim, proved to be incorruptible. An outraged Mephisto ordered the now corrupt priesthood to slay Khalim and scatter his remains. After that Sankekur become the new Que-Hegan.

Mephisto then ordered the priests to shatter his soulstone, freeing Mephisto's spirit. The Lord of Hatred then drove a shard of his soulstone in the left palm of each High Priest, with the largest shard piercing the hand of Sankekur. Over time, Sankekur would become the host of Mephisto's vile spirit.

With the Children of Zakarum under his control, the once proud and holy city of Travincal fell into ruin. Travincal became a shadow of its former self - a bastion of evil and corruption.

In game

The Travincal zone is of constant design, meaning it is one of the few area's not randomly generated. It is usually considered a very dangerous area due to the presence of many strong monsters, including the Super Unique Council Members that comprise the High Council. There's a waypoint hidden in the northern section of the city.

The Temple City - and the High Council of the Zakarum - were corrupted by the influence of the Lord of Hatred, Mephisto, and the city became a bloody and ruined shadow of its former self.
