This Interminable Conflict is one of the new notes introduced in Diablo Immortal with the Unending Storm update.[1] It is a journal of the inner thoughts of a demon (presumably Skarn) about the Eternal Conflict. The This Interminable Conflict can be found in the Halls of Punishment in the Realm of Damnation. After being read, it is unlocked as a page in the Adventurer's Chronicle.
Excerpt[]
- Since the dawn of time, this interminable battle has trudged along in spurts, with angels and demons alike spilling entrails and essence in rousing battle—risking all for the ultimate conquest of their sworn foes. And so, I expect, will the war continue, until one side sees the annihilation or domination of the other. I am under no illusion that either outcome is possible.
- I have lived long enough to see the Gates of Hell tremble under the siege of angelic forces, and I have fought in the shadow of the Lords of Hell at the foot of the Diamond Gates, savoring the taste of a victory that seemed assured. Yet here we stand, unsuccessful, and the war rages on.
- Why, you might ask, do we fight? The angels fight to exterminate us, to seize the Heart of Creation away for their own purposes. They would "cleanse the stain of our existence" from creation.
- We fight because their way of life is an affront to ours, and their aims threaten our survival. They seek to regiment and control, to bring everything under the heel of their perverted "order". They simply cannot comprehend that existence is by nature, chaos.
- If the fools had their way, they would never see it.
- Unlike some among the legions of Hell, I do not desire a permanent end to the conflict. I would not deny myself the ecstasy of gnashing an angel in one's jaws, of feeling the acrid, searing light of their very being oozing down one's tongues, and shuddering in rapturous agony as the enemy feebly drives their holy blades into your sinew as the last of their essence flows from them.
- I seek instead, the ultimate pleasure: to despoil and corrupt the angels in every manner, to twist them, until they would by nature inflict the same treatment upon their kin. I would watch the light fade from their wings, and gaze into their being, relishing the moment in which they realize they have become the very thing they despise.
- And then, I would lavish my new brethren with all the excruciating delights the Burning Hells have to offer. For, as any demon in my service would tell you, I am a humble, compassionate overseer, second in vision only to the Great Evils themselves. Perhaps they do not see it vet, but no matter.
- I have lived for eons. I will bide my time patiently, endearing myself to those above me—ripping out spines when necessary. I will help guide the Burning Hells to victory, and in so doing secure my deserved throne.
