The Spreading Darkness is the first quest of Act III of Diablo IV. It can be accessed as soon as the game's prologue is completed. After the quest is completed, players may choose Whittling Sanity or Suffering Disquiet.
Objectives[]
- Search for Lorath in Ked Bardu
- Speak with Daruuk (It seems Lorath had a rough night in Ked Bardu. I should speak with the barbarians overseeing him to learn what happened.)
- Rouse Lorath from his slumber (Lorath learned something upsetting and spent the night getting drunk. I should see if I can get him to speak with me.)
- Speak with Teckrin (Lorath has requested I speak to a local named Teckrin about messages he sent to Orbei Monastery)
- Return to update Lorath (I must return to Lorath with the news)
Transcript[]
- Villager: (groan) Can we never have peace? Shouting and cursing all night.
- Villager: They should run him out of town.
- Lorath (snoring)
- Daruuk: Well, he's still breathing.
- Khelit: He is lucky to be.
- Class: What happened here?
- Daruuk: That old man there...claims to be Horadrim, but he drinks like an ox.
- Lorath: (snores)
- Khelit: He came to town days ago, looking for a servant of the demon Lilith. A "pale man." It seems he didn't like what he found.
- Class: I see. I will take it from here.
- Khelit: Who are you?
- Class: He and I met in the Fractured Peaks. I saw his pale man in a vision, if you can believe it--
- Khelit: Enough, he's yours. Just keep away from the bottle, both of you.
- Cutscene plays
- Lorath: Bloody damn hells. What do you want?
- Class: You told me to meet you here, Lorath. Remember?
- Lorath: Of course I remember. I'm just surprised you're not dead.
- Lorath: Hand me that bottle.
- Class: What happened to you?
- Lorath: I was attacked, obviously. By vast quantities of alcohol, wielded by my own treacherous hand.
- Lorath: (grunt) There may also have been a brawl with a goat over this...patch of mud. I like to think I triumphed.
- Class: Lorath, who is the Pale Man?
- Lorath: (sighs) The "Pale Man" is...was...Horadrim.
- Class: Horadrim? Then you must know him.
- Lorath: (wince) I thought I did once. His name is Elias. He was my apprentice.
- Lorath: He was the one who brought Lilith into Sanctuary.
- Lorath: It's possible that I did not take the news very well.
- Class: What must we do then?
- Lorath: Find him. Figure out what he has done.
- Lorath: And then kill him.
- Lorath: Listen, there's a, uh...woman...here someplace. She has some messages we'll need and...I'm of no use to anyone right now.
- Lorath: Could you find her? Enough time has been wasted.
- Cutscene ends
- Lorath: Ugh, check around the inn. Ask if she's heard from the "Orbei Monastery."
- Class: Lorath sent me. Have you heard from the Orbei Monastery?
- Teckrin: (sigh) No. No word from Orbei. Same as yesterday, and the day before, but...I have something else.
- Teckrin: Rumor has it a pale man passed through the Abahru Canyons some time ago. Fearsome fellow, dressed in black.
- Teckrin: After Lorath's performance last night, I wager he'll want to know.
- Class: Teckrin had no messages, but--
- Lorath: Strange. I wrote to the Orbei Monastery the day I arrived. The Abbot should have replied by now...
- Class: Teckrin spoke of a rumor. A pale man, seen near the canyons.
- Lorath: The canyons? Why didn't you say so? We go at once!
- Lorath: (groan) But we can't leave Orbei unchecked...
- Lorath: Sod it. I'm off to the canyons. You can meet me there or go to the monastery.
- Lorath: You seem reliable, thus far. Do not prove me wrong.
Optional Dialogue[]
- Class: I bore witness to Lilith's evil in Scosglen.
- Lorath: Oh, Donan. That poor fool could have never guessed Lilith would come for Astaroth, let alone offer his boy to it. But what did she buy in return?
- Lorath: Astaroth hails from the Realm of Hatred, same as she. Perhaps she left something at home?
- Class: I have news from the Fractured Peaks.
- Lorath: Inarius's stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Had he not murdered Rathma, Lilith might have been stopped, but now...
- Lorath: Now she has the Key to Hell. We can assume she'll be looking for a door.
- Class: What did you want with the Orbei Monastery?
- Lorath: The Scholars of Orbei devote their lives to the study of forbidden knowledge. "To serve the Light, we must know the Darkness," or some other silly platitude.
- Lorath: I wrote to the Abbott seeking insights on Lilith. His silence is most unusual...
- Lorath: The man never misses a chance to speak...
- Class: Why would Elias summon Lilith?
- Lorath: (scoff) "Is he insane," you mean.
- Lorath: Elias was an exceptional mage. He would plunge through fire and shite in search of the truth...and every often found it.
- Lorath: Whatever "truth" he has found in Lilith, only he can say the why of it.
