The Smith was an Overlord demon.
Biography[]
The Smith was a particularly brutal demon. After the Sisters of the Sightless Eye were forced out of their monastery by Andariel, the Smith was assigned to guard the Horadric Malus. The Smith used the Malus to create weaponry for the minions of Diablo.[1] The Smith was not a particularly subtle fighter, and upon being confronted by a group of heroes, he attacked them immediately.[2] It was slain, and the heroes returned the Malus back to the Sisterhood.[3]
In-game[]
The Smith is a Super Unique Overlord with a blue hide found in Act I of Diablo II, located in the Barracks. He guards the Horadric Malus. Players need to get past him (not necessarily kill him) in order to retrieve the Malus for the Tools of the Trade quest.

Tips and Other Additional Information[]
The Smith guarding the Malus
Unlike Hephasto the Armorer, the even more Evil counterpart of The Smith, you do not actually have to kill The Smith in order to complete Tools of the Trade. The Smith is pretty fast but you can just try to get rid of him somewhere in the Barracks or even the Outer Cloister, for instance by creating a Town Portal near the Malus before you lure the Smith with you.
If you do face The Smith: his melee attack can be quite devastating on lower levels (when characters are not properly geared yet). If possible attack from range, or try to burn him down as quickly as possible.

Originally in v1.00-1.09d The Smith didn't have his iconic blue color, instead he had his default look that is now unused.
