"I was there, Hiram, when she called herself the Mother of Sanctuary, but she is the Daughter of Hatred. She killed all who stood in her way! My own mother and father among them!"

The Purge[1] refers to Lilith's extermination of the renegade angels and demons that had followed her and Inarius in creating Sanctuary.

Lore[]

The roots of the Purge lie with the nephalem. Born from couplings of angels and demons, the nephalem's parents realizedthat their offspring were far more powerful than they. Not only was there the concern that the nephalem might present a threat, but furthermore, they could draw the attention of Heaven and Hell to the realm the renegades had created. The defectors knew that if they were ever discovered, both they and their progeny would be destroyed.[1]

Because of this, many renegades held the opinion that the nephalem should be destroyed. Others that their children should be spared. Troubled by the dissension, Inarius called for a period of reflection. Thus, his followers agreed to consider the matter in solitude.[1]

Lilith slaughters angels and demons

According to ancient texts, Lilith was driven mad by the threat of her progeny's extinction.[1] She saw the nephalem as the future, and as the means of ending the Eternal Conflict once and for all[2] (albeit with the proviso of them serving as her own soldiers).[3] She morphed into a new, horrific form, and hunted down her fellow renegades,[1] slaughtering angels and demons alike.[4] Such was her frenzy, she did not distinguish between those she sought to eliminate and those she sought to save, and as such, nephalem fell at to her claws alongside angels and demons.[5] She ruthlessly murdered every follower of Inarius, leaving him to discover the carnage she had wrought.[1]

At this point, the Purge took on a new dimension as Inarius and Lilith rallied their followers; the Inari and Lilin respectively.[6] Ultimately, Inarius prevailed, but despite his rage, he was unable to bring himself to kill Lilith. Instead, he banished her into the Void.[1]

Inarius condemned the Lilin for siding with Lilith. He took the Worldstone away from Ancients' Cradle[7] and entrusted the Pathstone to the Inari, who had won his favor for serving him in the conflict.[8] Left alone in the world he had created, Inarius tampered with the Worldstone to cause the power of the nephalem to diminish over time. Over time, the nephalem would devolve into the mortal species known as humans.[1]
