The Light of Hope is the second quest of Act IV of Diablo III.

Walkthrough[]

Transcript[]

  • Itherael: Perhaps...fate can be changed. Quickly, then! Auriel, archangel of Hope, has been captured by Rakanoth, the Lord of Despair.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: I will free her.
  • Follower
    • Templar: Keep your guard up. There are foes at every turn.
  • Rakanoth: You think yourself free from the chains of fate, nephalem, but all will kneel before Lord Diablo!
  • Auriel: Thank you, nephalem. I hoped the Scroll of Fate was wrong, that harmony would once again fill this troubled realm. I see now that all hope lies in you.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: How strange.
  • Auriel: With my blessing you can now dispel Diablo’s corruption. It hides the rifts which bring his cursed servants to this hallowed place. The rifts must be closed.
  • Follower
    • Templar: It would be an honor, my lady.
  • Cutscene
    • Necromancer: I have found Auriel, the Archangel of Hope. With her aid, the High Heavens may yet prevail, though Tyrael is still lost. Diablo’s presence scars these halls… and the battle rages on in his infernal portals.
  • Follower
    • Templar: It’s awfully quiet. Prepare yourself, friend. Evil lurks here.
  • Follower
    • Templar: That corruption was strongest to the northeast, as I remember.
  • Diablo: Look upon the gardens. Now they seethe with the corruption of Hell!
  • Class
    • Templar: By the Light, I never wanted to see this demon squalor again!
  • Diablo: So, you approach the oculus with the aim to destroy it? You will not succeed!
  • Auriel: Well done, nephalem. Diablo’s vile minions can no longer use this rift to find their way into the Silver City. Now, only one rift remains.
  • Diablo: That is not the only Hell rift. The flow of my legions will not stop.
  • Follower
    • Templar: Danger looms around every corner. We should be on our guard.
  • Diablo: I draw closer to victory, nephalem. You are too late, just as you always have been.
  • Follower
    • Templar: There is no shortage of foes up here. Diablo works quickly.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: But his work can still be undone.
  • Diablo: If you destroy the oculus, my Hell rift will consume you!
  • Auriel: The Hell rifts are closed! You have far exceeded my expectations, nephalem, but there is not a moment to waste. Quickly — you must make your way to the Silver Spire.
  • Diablo: The Hell rifts are closed, but it is of no matter. Soon there will be nothing left of these High Heavens...All creation will be the Realm of Terror!
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Tyrael!
  • Tyrael: Yes, my friend. I am ready to again fight by your side. I was wrong to give in to despair. You have shown me there is still a chance for victory. But we must hurry. Even now Diablo makes his way to the Silver Spire! I finally understand. Your kind faces death and darkness every day, yet still you find the courage to move forward. It is an honor to be one of you.[1]

Townsfolk Dialogue (Bastion's Keep Stronghold)[]

  • Enchantress: I found a strange document on one of the angels’ bodies in the High Heavens. It is very old, maybe centuries even older than I.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: What does it say?
  • Enchantress: I am not certain. The script is very old and foreign to me. When I saw the angel, he was dying...but even though he was in great pain, he reached out to me with the document in his hand...like he wanted me to take it. By the time I approached him, he was still. His spirit had already gone.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Her soul remains, but it is powerless.
    • Wizard: Diablo consumed her. She is gone.
  • Covetous Shen: Do you not think Leah’s soul is stronger than that? But, oh, but then sometimes I — I forget that you have not seen everything that I have seen.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Then enlighten me, old man. If that is what you truly are...
    • Wizard: You always dodge the truth. What are you?
  • Covetous Shen: Er, what am I? I am Covetous Shen, of course — no more, no less. To some, that has meant one thing; to others, another.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: When will you tell me what it means to you?
    • Wizard: When will you give me a real answer?
  • Covetous Shen: When the sun sets in the east and the shore swallows the tide. When the moon smiles upon the day and the blind man sees once again.
  • Myriam: You will soon free Auriel and bring her hope back to the High Heavens, sending Despair to a well-deserved death.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: You are certain of that?
  • Myriam: I left my people and everyone I loved to help you on your journey. I have no doubt you will succeed. You need to have more faith in yourself.
  • Myriam: So, now you know — the nephalem are not in the Scroll of Fate. Heard it from Fate himself. You can write your own destiny.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Then how can you see it?
  • Myriam: Perhaps I have my own nephalem powers, eh? That — and you are quite predictable.
  • Haedrig Eamon: I’m sorry for what I said before. I was upset. I don’t know what it is, but I feel better, like things can be made right.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: You are hopeful.
  • Haedrig Eamon: Yes, that’s it exactly. My wife would not have wanted me to wallow in my misery. She would have wanted me to do everything I could do help you win this battle. And you can win. I know that now.
  • Villager: I was a fool to doubt you. You truly are a wonder!
  • Boy: I looked through the portal.
  • Girl: You did not!
  • Boy: Did so. It's scary in there.
  • Small Boy: I heard Dason’s mum say that you were sent by Akarat to save us. Is it true?
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Not Akarat. I serve one called Rathma.
  • Captain Haile: Bloody hell. You’re still alive. What in blazes do they make people out of where you come from?
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Wielding death magic has its advantages. But you are much better suited to holding these people together.
  • Captain Haile: Absolutely, my lady. If you can charge the gates of Heaven on your own, I can keep spirits up around here. You there! Damotrius! Stop moping about! If this was your funeral, I’m bloody well certain you would have been told!
  • Damotrius: Sorry, sir.
  • Nikola: You amaze me. So much loss, and you keep fighting. Thank you.
  • Soldier: Blood of Rakkis! What does it take to stop that one?
  • Soldier 2: Even if we live long enough to have grandchildren, they’ll never believe us.
  • Soldier: She’s back. Can you believe it? He's/She’s back from Heaven!
  • Soldier 2: Not just that. She’s winning!
  • Villager: There’s no stopping you, is there?
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Not yet.[1]

Townsfolk Dialogue (Gardens of Hope)[]

  • Itherael: Only once in the history of Sanctuary has a nephalem been as powerful as you. His name was Uldyssian.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Some call him a myth.
  • Itherael: He was no myth. Because of his noble sacrifice, I saw the inherent potential in your kind. As such, I voted with Auriel to spare mankind from annihilation.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Tyrael blamed us for Diablo’s return, yet we are all that stands between the angels and certain death.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: How can you look into the future?
  • Itherael: I see the myriad streams of possibility, all intertwining and weaving into one another. I can hear them echoing forward into eternity.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: But you cannot choose the paths?
  • Itherael: I am not called to be a champion as you are. My role is simply to observe.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: What is the foretold end of this battle?
  • Itherael: Doom and darkness. These Heavens ruined...The angelic Host broken...Diablo victorious.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: It cannot be.
  • Itherael: As I have said, nephalem, your destiny is unwritten. You alone may change these dark times.
  • Auriel: I knew you would come, that a champion from the mortal world would light our darkest hour. Your courage and nobility shine out across this realm, blinding our enemies.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: I do not deserve such praise. Had I acted faster, this darkness never would have come to pass.
  • Auriel: I know you will do all you can, for this is your hour. Go forth with my blessing and show all creation why the nephalem are the future!
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Tyrael is no longer himself.
  • Auriel: There is a shadow upon his heart, but it will pass. Remember, he chose to be a mortal, and he must overcome this despair as a mortal.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: That is what worries me.
  • Auriel: Have faith in him. Of all the archangels, his light has always shone the brightest. In this, our darkest hour, he will ensure that justice prevails.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: What will you do now?
  • Auriel: Though the angelic Host is scattered, we are not defeated. I will try to rally them as best I can.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: How do you believe Diablo can be defeated?
  • Auriel: Only in the light that lies within you, nephalem. I will take heart from it and hope for your victory. The future is ever writing itself, unknowable, just beyond sight and touch.[1]

Quest Log[]

  • Part 1
    • Barbarian: The demon is vanquished. If Diablo thinks he can triumph by sending his minions against me, he is sorely mistaken. I will purge the Heavens of these foes until the Lord of Terror faces me himself. Tyrael still refuses to join me, but I will speak to his brethren. There may yet be an angel in Heaven who will help.
    • Crusader: Diablo's first champion, Iskatu, is dead. There will be more. But the Crusade has taught me never to stop. If Tyrael cannot rouse himself, I will find another angel to aid me.
    • Demon Hunter: I have faced a minion of Terror and triumphed. The fate of the Heavens is dire indeed, but this small victory may herald more to come. I won’t stop until the blood of Diablo’s demons runs black down the crystalline halls of Heaven. That will draw out the Lord of Terror.
  • Part 2
    • Barbarian: The leadership of the Heavens is scattered and broken. Imperius is consumed with rage, and Tyrael wallows in guilt. The Archangel of Hope has been captured by demons, and Itherael alone has told me where she can be found. I will slay Rakanoth, who holds Auriel prisoner in the Library of Fate. Then, perhaps more angels will prove themselves useful.
    • Crusader: Imperius is an angry sort of angel. With Tyrael still despondent and the archangel of Hope captured by demons, only Itherael can advise me.
    • Demon Hunter: I had been wondering where the angelic Host had gone. Now it all makes sense. Auriel, the archangel of Hope, has been imprisoned, and the other angels, even Tyrael, are listless and dejected without her influence. I must liberate her before it is too late.
    • Necromancer: An archangel has been captured during Diablo’s invasion. Auriel, the archangel of Hope, is perhaps the most instrumental in motivating the angelic Host to fight valiantly in the face of a threat. Clearly Diablo made a strategic decision to target her.
  • Part 3
    • Barbarian: Raknoth is slain. Now I must free Auriel from her prison and seek her counsel.
    • Crusader: Now I can free Auriel, the aspect of Hope. Perhapse she can help Tyrael?
    • Demon Hunter: Hell has lost another mighty demon, but Auriel is still trapped within her prison. I must free her quickly and find out what she knows.
  • Part 4
    • Barbarian: The Archangel Auriel is free. She has proved to be worthy ally by granting me the power to dispel the corruption that mars these lands. With this gift, I will be able to reach Diablo's Hell rifts and close them. We shall see how powerful the Lord of Terror is when he is cut off from his armies in the Brurning Hells.
    • Crusader: Auriel gave me the power to cleanse the corruption that blocks off so much of the Heavens. This ability will aid me in reaching Diablo.
    • Demon Hunter: Auriel has granted me the ability to dispel demonic corruption from the High Heavens. With this gift, I should be able to fight my way to the Hell rifts that links realm to the Burning Hells, and then I will destroy the portals. When Diablo’s armies are cut off from their reinforcements, I will be ready to pursue the Lord of Terror himself.
    • Necromancer: I should have known that Auriel would have the determination to halt Diablo’s invasion. She has explained how to repel Diablo’s corruption and loosen his grip on the Heavens. If only the other angels were so reasonable.
  • Part 5
    • Barbarian: The Hell rift is shut. I must use Hope's portal to leave before I am trapped in the rubble.
    • Crusader: The Hell rift is shut. I must use Hope's portal to leave before I am trapped here forever.
    • Demon Hunter: I have closed one of the Hell rifts, but this place grows unstable without Diablo’s spellwork to uphold it. I must return to the gardens through Auriel’s portal at once.
    • Necromancer: Dark, chaotic energy seethes within the Hell rifts. Under better circumstances, it would be interesting to study further, but there is no time for that now.
  • Part 6
    • Barbarian: I have destroyed one of the Hell rifts, but another remains on the second tier of the Garden of Hope. The gateway cannot be far. I will find it.
    • Crusader: I destroyed one of the Hell rifts, but another remains on the second tier of the Gardens of Hope. I'll find that one too.
    • Demon Hunter: Auriel mentioned another Hell rift. It must be up ahead, in the second tier of the Gardens of Hope. The entrance cannot be too far...I will search for it.
  • Part 7
    • Barbarian: The last Hell rift should be near. I must clear the demons' corruption in order to reveal it. I cannot help but see that my foes grow fiercer as I advance. They know by now that I will not easily be bested.
    • Crusader: I am finished, and should return to the Gardens of Hope as soon as possible. Diablo's invasion may yet succeed.
    • Demon Hunter: There is just one Hell rift left, hiding beneath the demons’ corruption. I will find the portal as quickly as I can so that I may pursue my true prey: Diablo. I cannot rest until I face him... I have no doubt that my nightmares would overwhelm me, and I would never wake again.
    • Necromancer: One by one, the minions of Hell fall before me. It will not be long before I can face Diablo himself, and either restore the Balance or give my life in the attempt.
  • Part 8
    • Barbarian: My work here is done. I must return to the gardens before Diablo makes good on his threats.
    • Crusader: I have destroyed Diablo's portals and with them, his ability to reinforce his army. I imagine he'll send his remaining demons to face me. That suits me just fine.
    • Demon Hunter: It wasn't easy, but I’ve closed the Hell rifts. The taste of ash in the air will surely be with me for a while, but at least it’s done. Now I must pass through Auriel’s portal to get back to the gardens.
    • Necromancer: The rifts are shut, but too many demons have already entered this realm. It will be no small task defeating them all.
  • Part 9
    • Barbarian: I have destroyed Diablo's portals to his armies in the Burning Hells, so I expect he will send all of his remaining forces against me. I care not. I have vanquished so many already; deranged cultists, Lord of Hell, fearsome demons from the twisted depths below...I am ready to confront the Lord of Terror in the Silver Spire.
    • Demon Hunter: The Gardens of Hope are safe for now. I must find the entrance to the Silver Spire, where Diablo waits. This has been a long time coming. I have dreamed of this moment for years...or perhaps those were nightmares...
  • Part 10
    • Barbarian: I have found Tyrael. He waits for me near the portal to the Crystal Colonnade. I had thought him lost in the battles that rage across the Heavens...But we are both old warriors who have seen much of disaster and tragedy. I must speak with him.
    • Crusader: I've found Tyrael. I must speak with him and see if he has learned to deal with the wild emotions of a mortal in combat.
    • Demon Hunter: Tyrael is here! That is quite a relief. I nearly thought him lost to the demons... just as I have lost so many others. The end of this great trail is upon me, and it will be good to have another ally by my side. I must speak with him right away.
    • Necromancer: Tyrael is here...I must speak with him.
  • Part 11
    • Barbarian: Tyrael is ready to stand by my side once again. We both know that the battles awaiting us will not be easy ones. We must fight relentlessly for every piece of ground we gain. But we will go to the Crystal Colonnade and up the Silver Spire itself, whatever the price. This is our only hope for victory.
    • Crusader: Tyrael is ready to stand by my side. The fighting will be hard, and I am glad to have him. We will make our way to the Crystal Colonnade and then up the Silver Spire itself.
    • Demon Hunter: Tyrael has found the will to fight once again. I must say I am a little surprised. I have not seen many come back from the pepths of despair...But now it is time to journey through the portal to the Crystal Colonnade and pursue Diablo in the Silver Spire. Whatever awaits us, at least we will not face it alone.
    • Necromancer: I must admit, it is a relief to have Tyrael’s cooperation once again. How curious that angels themselves can become vulnerable to despair so easily.
