Transcript[]
Core Script[]
The quest is initiated by talking with Leah,
The Nephalem: Come, let us search for your uncle.
Leah: We'll need to open the cathedral first. The guards locked it up before they were ambushed. Rumford told me they fought their way back to Adria's hut. The key must still be there.
Use the New Tristram Waypoint to go to the Old Ruins
Leah: Here, let me open the gate.
Find Adria's Hut
On the way there:
Leah: Adria was my mother, but I don't know much about her. She died when I was very young. I was raised by Uncle Deckard.
The Nephalem: What happened to your father?
Leah: I'm told he was a great warrior who was lost when Tristram fell to the demons.
Search Adria's Hut
Leah: Look---a hidden cellar! Follow me!
Enter the Hidden Cellar in Adria's Hut
The Nephalem: Your mother's secrets are here.
Leah: People said she was a witch, but I never believed it.
Leah: Captain Daltyn?!
Kill Captain Daltyn and his risen army
- Quest reward: Gold and Experience
Talk to Leah in the Hidden Cellar
Leah: Here's the key...and my mother's journal. What I've seen of it is disturbing. I want to know more about her, but that can wait. We need to save Uncle Deckard first!
The Nephalem: I will find your uncle. Stay here and find out what you can.
Leah: Thank you.
Go to the Cathedral
Optional Dialogue
The Nephalem: How did your mother die?
Leah: Well, details are hazy, but I know that Adria was obsessed with chasing the arcane. She knew she could never raise a child. Uncle Deckard believes that the madness and horror of her life finally caught up with her.
Enter Cathedral Level 1
Search for signs of Deckard Cain in the Cathedral.
The Nephalem: The star fell here.
Enter Leoric's Passage
Deckard Cain: Foul minions! Stay back! Back!!
Deckard Cain: May this ledge hold...
Deckard Cain: The Skeleton King?
Skeleton King: The power of the fallen star awakened me, and soon all will suffer as I have suffered. Guards! Bring me his bones.
The Nephalem: Cain! I will save you!
Deckard Cain: Back to your graves!
Talk to Deckard Cain in Leoric's Passage
Deckard Cain: Thank you. But why did you risk yourself for me?
The Nephalem: It was not your time, old man. Come, Leah is waiting for you.
Deckard Cain: Oh...It is wonderful to hear that Leah is well! I feared the worst.
Deckard Cain: I learned of this secret passage through old maps I found.
Follow Deckard Cain
Go to the Cathedral Garden
Deckard Cain: We must discuss the fallen star. Follow me to Tristram.
Talk to Leah in New Tristram
Cutscene
- Necromancer: I have found Leah’s uncle, Deckard Cain. He was pursued by a creature called the Skeleton King — who blocks the path to the fallen star.
Leah: Uncle! You're alive!
Deckard Cain: Thanks to you and your friend here.
The Nephalem: Time runs short. Tell me what you know of the fallen star.
Deckard Cain: Not much, I'm afraid, though the Prophecy of the End Days surely point to it as a sign that the end has begun...
Leah: Please, Uncle, not more of your stories. All that matters now is that you're back.
- Quest Reward: Gold and Experience
Town Dialogue[]
Leah: I’ve spent most of my life traveling from place to place with Uncle Deckard while he did his crazy research.
The Nephalem: It seems reasonable enough to me.
Leah: He is convinced that the forces of Hell will invade our world and bring about the end times. All these years, he’s still searching for a way to stop this...apocalypse.
The Nephalem What did you learn of Adria?
Leah She wasn’t from Tristram originally. She came here during the troubles. She was in search of something, but I am not sure what. She reminds me of Uncle Deckard, obsessed with the war between angels and demons.
Mayor Holus: So this is how it ends? They dragged my cart from the road, but for what? I can’t get it repaired. Might as well dig a hole and die in it.
The Nephalem: You would not be alone. Many have died before their time here.
Villager #1: You know what would take everyone’s mind off their troubles? One of Theodas's great comedies.
Villager #2: I've seen one of them. Two men dressed as women, screeching at each other and tearing their bodices? Oh, that’d cheer me right up.
Villager #3: Glad to hear it. Rehearsal is in three hours!
Arghus the Collector: Each of my items is very special to me, but I suppose I can sell you one or two things if I must.
Villager #3: Leah spent all night alongside the blacksmith’s wife, tending the wounded.
Villager #4: What? She was out defending the gates this morning. What is driving that woman?
Villager #5: Did you hear? Old Rumford has us down to half rations. How are we supposed to fight if we’re starving?
Villager #6: The rest of the town is down to quarter. Including my wife. But you can quit if you want.
- Class
- Necromancer: What troubles you?
- Witch Doctor: Are you troubled?
- Haedrig Eamon: It's my wife; she's very ill.
- Class:
- Necromancer: There is a balance in all things. Should her time come, death is nothing to fear.
- Witch Doctor: I hope she recovers.
- Haedrig Eamon: It doesn't seem likely that Deckard Cain could have survived down in the cathedral this long, does it?
- Class
- Witch Doctor: He is alive, and I will rescue him.
- Haedrig Eamon: You seem quite sure of yourself. Do you know something I don't?
Radek the Fence: Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve got some new items you really should see. Sure, I may do business with some unsavory types, but I pass the savings on to you!
Guard: This gate is locked by order of the captain.
Guard: You can’t go out there! The hollow is swarming with horrors. If we were to open these gates they’d overwhelm the town in minutes.
Quest Journal[]
- Part 1
- Barbarian: The star fell into the depths beneath the cathedral. I will have to break through armies of the dead to reach it. The girl Leah believes that her uncle, Deckard Cain, still lives. I will find him...or his corpse. She deserves that much.
- Crusader: I am finally ready to journey to the cathedral. Could the answers to the crusade lie within? Leah has asked me to look for her uncle, Deckard Cain. Given that he is an elderly scholar, I would very much like to speak with him - if he still lives.
- Demon Hunter: I do not know whether Leah’s uncle survived his ordeal, but I’m reluctant to trust to hope. I’ve found that it has a way of betraying you. Still, if the meteor fell into the cathedral, it is worth looking into. Leah has a stout heart. She reminds me a little of my sister, Halissa...
- Monk: Leah is determined to find her uncle, Deckard Cain, who she believes has somehow survived the destruction in the cathedral. I am sceptical, but for her sake, I will search for him.
- Wizard: My search for the fallen star leads me to the cathedral in Old Tristram. While there, I will also look for signs of Deckard Cain, Leah's uncle. She is certain he still lives. I haven't the heart to tell her differently.
- Part 2
- Barbarian: New Tristram's militia thought it could pen the dead in the cathedral. The men were trapped instead, forced back into the hut northeast of Old Tristram, and slaughtered. I must go there and find the key. Only then will I be able to enter the cathedral and search for Deckard Cain.
- Crusader: I must find the key that will allow me to enter the cathedral, and for this, Leah accompanies me. It's almost as if I had taken on an apprentice. Something I must do soon, for if I fall without training an apprentice, my name will die with me.
- Demon Hunter: If the areas around the town are teeming with so many dead, I can only guess how many are in Tristram Cathedral. I’d imagine that the New Tristram militiamen found themselves in quite a predicament when they tried to seal the door. Leah and I must be cautious out here. Our former allies may now be our enemies.
- Monk: Leah has come with me to show the way to Tristram Cathedral. We venture deeper into the forest that surrounds the town, and I suspect only greater danger awaits us in the fog and mist.
- Wizard: I feel as though I am stepping back in time, following in the path of the Dark Wanderer, and I will soon search the cathedral for Deckard Cain. But first, I must find the key that will allow me to enter the cathedral.
- Part 3
- Barbarian: The star fell into the depths beneath the cathedral. I will have to break through armies of the dead to reach it. The girl Leah believes that her uncle, Deckard Cain, still lives. I will find him...or his corpse. She deserves that much.
- Crusader: I am finally ready to journey to the cathedral. Could the answers to the crusade lie within? Leah has asked me to look for her uncle, Deckard Cain. Given that he is an elderly scholar, I would very much like to speak with him - if he still lives.
- Demon Hunter: I asked Leah to stay behind to learn more about her mother, but truly I hope to spare her the pain of discovering her uncle’s fate firsthand. This cathedral is a dangerous place… There are many hunters who would not enter it. But I am not one of them.
- Monk: Leah is conflicted by her desires. She wishes to learn more about her mother, and the cellar may hold answers to many of the questions she has. But she also knows that if her uncle lives, he my not have long. I believe she will be safer here, and have told that I will continue to the cathedral alone.
- Wizard: My search for the fallen star leads me to the cathedral in Old Tristram. While there, I will also look for signs of Deckard Cain, Leah's uncle. She is certain he still lives. I haven't the heart to tell her differently.
- Part 4
- Barbarian: The star cleaved this place down to the core. The dead swarm up from the depths like maggots in an old wound. I doubt Cain still lives, but I gave my word to his niece. I will return with him or with his corpse.
- Crusader: The dead are thicker inside the Cathedral. Whatever stirred them, it lies beneath this place, with the falling star. I hope the old man Cain lives, but it seems unlikely.
- Demon Hunter: The cathedral is full of risen dead ─ those who were killed during Leoric’s mad reign, and foolhardy villagers who ventured down here, searching for treasure. Now the fallen star has brought them all back from their graves. Perhaps Cain will know more, if he still lives…
- Monk: Just like outside of the town, the cathedral is teeming with the risen dead. I am surrounded by destruction and ruin. There is little chance Cain has survived down here, but I will search all the same and hope that the gods have seen fit to spare him.
- Wizard: I have been in better places than this cathedral. I hear desiccated whispers, maddened laughter, and scrape of shifting bones. The prophecies imply that the fallen star is responsible for this surge of death. I fear there is little hope of finding Deckard Cain alive in this terrible ruin.
- Part 5
- Barbarian: Cain still lives, but he will not for long without my help.
- Crusader: Cain lives! I'd best keep it that way.
- Demon Hunter: Deckard Cain is still alive, but he needs my aid!
- Monk: Deckard Cain lives! But not for long, without my aid.
- Wizard: I have found Deckard Cain just in time to save him from certain death.
- Part 6
- Barbarian: Cain is though for an old man, Leah will be glad to see him.
- Crusader: The old fellow is though. I think Leah will be very happy to see him again.
- Demon Hunter: Deckard Cain is still alive, but he needs my aid!
- Monk: Cain will live. I will return to New Tristram with him. Leah will be overjoyed to be reunited.
- Wizard: I am astonished that Cain survived. Leah will be happy indeed that her hopes were justified.
