The Gavel of Pain is a unique Martel de Fer available in Diablo II.
Its high damage combined with its ability to cast a moderate-level Amplify Damage using charges, an effect unique to this item, is quite useful, making it a potential toolbox weapon a physical attacker can keep in their inventory to expend charges to curse enemies when needed even if they don't intend to otherwise use the weapon. This can be especially important in Hell difficulty, when Immune to Physical becomes a more common problem, for physical attackers who don't have a skill-based way around this immunity, though outside of those situations, the increased damage and lifesteal from the curse still play directly into such a character's strengths. However, its charges of Amplify Damage are low in number, so casting should be limited to use against bosses or Immune to Physical uniques unless the player is ready to frequently return to town to repair the item.
