This is named for the historical Lorica Hamata, Roman chain mail armor. The more famous Lorica Segmentata would be the Roman equivalent of plate mail.

- Loricate is an English verb that means to protect with a covering. It comes from that Latin verb, lorico, which means to cover something with lorica, which is a generic Latin term for armor. In other words, Loricated Mail can be read as a protective covering of mail, though is a bit redundant, as a more literal reading of it would be armored mail (and since mail is armor; armored armor).
- If it was Roman armor, it wouldn't even be lorica hamata, but rather lorica squamata.
