Why is it that every time i spent a point in clay golem, it made me wait one level before i could put another point in :(

Because of the way the game is balanced, you can only put one point in a certain tier spell per level. For example, Enchant is a level 18 ability, meaning at level 18 you'd be able to put one point in, and at level 19 two points, and so on. If it wasn't like this, you could avoid spending any points in the first couple levels whatsoever, and as soon as you reach a powerful spell (such as Fire Ball for example), you'd be able to pump all your points into that and be overpowered for a while.
