Core[]
- Deckard Cain: Tell me everything you remember, stranger. Every detail.
- The Stranger: Falling...fire...a sword of great power. It was...part of me, but it shattered into three pieces as I fell.
- Deckard Cain: It is vital that we find those pieces. I believe the sword made whole will restore your memory.
- Deckard Cain: Of course, of course! Just as the dead rose around the Stranger, the sword pieces drove the goatmen to madness.
- Class
- Necromancer: It's possible. We’ll have our answers once I retrieve the sword.
Urik the Seer (Prophet of Torture): We must hurry with the ritual: Maghda will be here soon. It is turning.
- Class
- Necromancer: There is the sword piece...
- Maghda: Who are you to take what is mine?
- Class
- Necromancer: It belongs to another.
- Maghda: Regardless, I have claimed it. I am Maghda, and I lead this coven. The shard...is mine.
- Class
- Necromancer: Then you have made an enemy.
- Maghda: Very well. Let the games begin.
- Maghda: Well fought, but you will never possess the next piece. It has fallen where only the ancients may tread.
- Class
- Templar: She is more devious than she appears.
- Class
- Necromancer: I recovered a piece of the sword, but members of a coven are pursuing it as well.
- Leah: Uncle Deckard, they sound like those dark cultists you told me about.
- Deckard Cain: Very good, Leah. You have been paying attention. Stranger, does any of this jar your memory?
- The Stranger: I have no memory of this coven...but I sense a far darker shadow guiding its hand.[1]
Townsfolk Dialogue[]
- Deckard Cain: The Horadrim were powerful mages gathered together by the archangel Tyrael to defeat the three Prime Evils: Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal. They devoted themselves fully to the destruction of the demon lords and left behind valuable tomes and teachings.
- Class
- Necromancer: And you are connected to them, right?
- Deckard Cain: My ancestor was the leader of the Horadrim, Jered Cain. When the Horadrim died out, their tomes stayed in my family. I was thrilled by tales of the Horadrim as a little boy, but it wasn’t until I returned to them as an adult that I realized they contained deeper truths.
- Deckard Cain: Tyrael is the angel of Justice. He has been helping mankind for generations, though he is forbidden to do so in any direct manner. Long ago, the High Heavens and the Burning Hells made a pact as a result of the Sin War that they would not interfere in our world.
- Class
- Necromancer: So Tyrael is bound to his word even though the demons have broken their pact?
- Deckard Cain: The Angiris Council, the archangels that lead Heaven, almost destroyed our world once to keep the demons from spreading their corruption upon it. If Tyrael were to act directly, it would alert the Council to the demons’ activities here and imperil us all.
- Class
- Necromancer: Do you remember anything else yet?
- The Stranger: Only that there were surges of light and...a kind of pain.
- Class
- Necromancer: You seem unwell.
- The Stranger: The emptiness gnaws at me. It is a constant frustration.
- Class:
- Necromancer: There is no need for that. I will return the sword soon.
- Captain Rumford: I hear you are going to the fields. It was a place of great beauty before the dirty khazra fouled it with their presence. Kill some of them for me, will you?
- Myriam: Do not question the path you are on. It will lead you through things that will try your very soul, but you'll always have me to talk to.
- Class
- Necromancer: Talking is a waste of time.
- Myriam: You pretend you are a rock, but I know the softness you don't want anyone to see. Why else would you continue to come and talk to Myriam?
- Covetous Shen: Oh, perhaps it was a jewel that fell from the sky. Did you ever consider that?
- Class
- Necromancer: I cannot say I did. Besides, we know now that it was a man.
- Covetous Shen: A Man? Now, that is strange. Where do you suppose he came from? And how did he survive his fall? Did he have any jewels on him?
- Deckard Cain: Maghda's coven is a remnant of an ancient religion, called the Triune, that worshipped the Prime Evils as gods.
- Class
- Necromancer: The Prime Evils are gone. Who do they serve now?
- Deckard Cain: The last two Evils, Azmodan and Belial, remain...and if either of them are behind this coven, then our troubles are only beginning.
- Class
- Necromancer: A most unusual sword fragment, isn’t it?
- The Stranger: Indeed. It feels familiar to me, though the rest is still unclear.
- Class
- Necromancer: It looks like a weapon for a great warrior.
- The Stranger: If that is what I am, then my strength has gone with my memory.
- Class
- Necromancer: Such things have a way of returning to us in times of need.
- Myriam: The foul witch waits for you to unseal the temple of the ancients that she may strike. Her master would sacrifice anything to control the destiny of the Stranger. I would tell you to be careful but you wouldn't listen, would you?[1]
Quest Journal[]
- Part 1
- Barbarian: The fallen star may be a man with a broken memory, but I know a warrior when I see one. He says that his sword shattered during his fall. Cain believes that finding it may solve this riddle. The first piece fell somewhere in the Fields of Misery.
- Crusader: The fallen star is a man. He has no memories, but I know warrior when I see one. He says he lost his sword in the fall, and Cain thinks that returning it to him will restore his memory. Seems a slim chance, but I'll go to the fields of misery and search for the first piece.
- Demon Hunter: I have discovered the force behind the fallen star, but he is only a man. Moreover, he doesn’t remember anything useful about his strange arrival except that he lost a sword of great importance. One of the pieces fell in the Fields of Misery. I’d best recover it quickly so I may unravel more of this mystery.
- Monk: The fallen star is a man. But none of the questions his presence raises can be answered, for this stranger’s memory is lost. He remembers only that he once held a sword of great power that is now broken. One of the pieces fell in the Fields of Misery. Perhaps if I bring it to him, it will restore some of his memories.
- Wizard: The fallen star is just a man, a man who holds no memory of who he is. He can remember only a sword of power, split apart during his fall. Cain believes that if we restore the Stranger's sword, his memory will return. I go now to the Fields of Misery in search of the first piece.
- Part 2
- Barbarian: I have tracked one of the Stranger's missing sword pieces to a Khazra Den in the Fields of Misery. Khazra will not keep me from my task. My blade will cut them down if they bar my way.
- Crusader: I have tracked the first piece of the Stranger's shattered sword to a khazra den in the Fields of Misery' I suppose I'll go have words with the goatmen.
- Demon Hunter: The sword piece has fallen into a khazra den. It seems Leah was right about the sword’s magic influencing the goatmen. If these simpleminded creatures have noticed its power, others may be aware of it as well. I’ll have to take care in retrieving the fragment.
- Monk: A piece of the Stranger’s sword has fallen into a den of Khazra. The sword’s power has changed these creatures and made them dangerous. But not too dangerous for me.
- Wizard: The sword's magic has drawn me to a khazra den in the Fields of Misery. Somehow, I doubt the goatmen will let me take the sword piece without a fight.
- Part 3
- Barbarian: The sword piece lies before me. I will take it and return to Deckard Cain.
- Crusader: Well here's the sword piece. I suppose I should take it to Cain.
- Demon Hunter: I’m free to take the sword piece now. I must get it to Deckard Cain in New Tristram before more trouble finds me.
- Monk: The sword piece is mine. I will take it to Deckard Cain and the Stranger.
- Wizard: The sword piece is mine. I have but to claim it and return to New Tristram.
- Part 4
- Barbarian: I have claimed the sword fragment from the grasp of cultists who were performing some vile ritual upon it. Their leader, a witch named Maghda, mocked me but would not face me in battle. It is not the last I will see of her. I now return to New Tristram with the piece of the Stranger's sword.
- Crusader: I met the most interesting woman, Maghda, She's a witch and she leads a cult. I suspect I'll see her again. In any case, I've found a sword fragment and should get it to Cain.
- Demon Hunter: Those cultists looked just like the ones who held Kormac captive back in Tristram Cathedral. They are led by a witch named Maghda, and she’s after the sword as well. This can’t be good. I’ll bring this piece to Deckard Cain and see what he thinks of our new adversaries.
- Monk: It appears that Maghda and the cultists who follow her are searching for the Stranger’s sword as well. I will bring the sword piece to Cain and see if he can provide any insight about it. Then, I will search for the next piece.
- Wizard: It seems I am not the only one searching for the Stranger's sword. I had a very interesting encounter with a witch named Maghda and her crazed minions. They thought to stop me from taking the sword piece, but their efforts were for naught. Yet this Maghda will not be deterred so easily, I fear. I will now bring this piece of the Stranger's sword to Cain in New Tristram.
