Name Origin[]
In the original Diablo, multiplayer characters who engaged in PvP had the option to collect the ear of the player they vanquished. This ear was stored in the player's inventory and when moused over, it would display which player's ear it was. In the early days, this was a great way to flaunt your power, not to mention make powerful parties. That was until hackers found a way to create ears in the player's inventory.
