Stormpoint Keep

Stormpoint Keep

Stormpoint Keep (a.k.a. Stormpoint Prison)[1] is a fortress located on the island of Stormpoint.

Lore[]

Operated by Westmarch, the keep had a standing garrison. The guards and their families resided in the Shanties, located outside the keep proper. Long before the destruction of the Worldstone, Westmarch decided it could no longer afford to maintain the prison, and left the keep and its inhabitants to their own devices.[1] Over the years, the soldiers' swords and armor rusted and became brittle, due to the island's constant exposure to sea wind.[2]

In 1265, the Worldstone was destroyed. A shard landed off the shore of Stormpoint.[1] At some point, the shard was discovered by Warden Woodruh, who brought it inside the fortress. The next day, he passed it around the mess. One of the guards tried to grab it, and the next moment, began spitting up seawater. Another guard had to put the madman down.[3]

The effects of the Worldstone continued to ravage the prison. Minor offenders were moved to the Shanties, while the more serious offenders remained inside, as they were too dangerous to be released. Both the guards and the creatures continued to transform into hideous creatures. Commander Kenton ordered the prison sealed.[3]

The Siege of Stormpoint[]

Stormpoint

The fortress is besieged

In 1272, the keep was besieged by the Cult of Terror, in a bid to retrieve the Worldstone shard located within.[4] The attack included demons, which the cult had summoned through conducting human sacrifices. The Howling Terror was unleashed upon the fortress, bombarding it with lightning blasts from on high.[1] Demons reguarly attacked the keep's defenders along the barbican.[5] While the keep's defenders were able to hold back the demonic hordes, hunger and exhaustion took their toll on the defenders. Hunters were offered rewards to hunt Trebuchet Crabs as a source of sustenance.[6]

Even after the siege proper had ended, fighting continued in and around the fortress, as the defenders struggled to react to each threat that reared itself. Guards stationed on the walls were few in number, but some had to be transferred to the prison as the Transformed wiped out the guards stationed there.[7] Refugees kept on coming to the keep, but as space became scarce, refugees not related to the soldiers were turned back.[8]

Trivia[]

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • Ryan Quinn has called Stormpoint Keep an "inverse Bastion's Keep," with the player turning up with the fight partway lost, rather than defending against the initial assault.[1] This comment contradicts Diablo III however, as in the Siege of Bastion's Keep, the Nephalem arrived on the tenth day of the siege, with the defenders close to defeat. If anything, the two sieges are more similar than different.
  • The actual prison of the Stormpoint Keep is a network of subterranean caverns connected to the Keep by a lift
