The Southern Dreadlands
The Southern Dreadlands is a region of the Dreadlands.[1]
Lore[]
The Southern Dreadlands includes the northern plains and tundra near the region of Arreat.[2] It is a cold, apocalyptic place, and here, the effects of the Worldstone's destruction on the land and its inhabitants are evident. Ruinous storms of Worldstone splinters sweep through the area, and twisted Shardborne and creation-warped beasts stalk the wilderness.[3] are an expansive area that includes acid-streaked plains and hills along with deep underground ravines.[2]
History[]
When Tyrael destroyed the corrupted Worldstone, Mount Arreat crumbled, and ash rained down for days. Arreat's collapse left twisted ravines[4] and the corrupted Worldstone shards twisted the land itself into a horrifying new environment.[5]

A splinter-storm
The Southern Dreadlands were subject to splinter-storms[6] — horrifying red storms that carried tiny splinters and particles of the destroyed Worldstone. When a storm passed through a settlement, it either cut the inhabitants to pieces or transformed them into Shardborne. Diablo's servants ravaged the north, along with insects and beasts twisted by the power of creation.[4]
The last shelter left in the area was the great city of Staalbreak, the last hope for scores of northern refugees. The cruel laird who controlled Staalbreak was very particular about who he let through the gates. A huge encampment, the Gray Wards, formed outside the city, where people begged for access...and plotted revolution.[4]
