"... One of Diablo's greatest, scariest and spookiest monsters"

Shumbeel, the Howling Terror was a gigantic manticore-esque demon. He was one of the greatest servants of Diablo.[3]

The Howling Terror, Shumbeel is a ravenous predator whose shattering screams drove angels to the ground throughout the Battlefields of Eternity. Loosed on Sanctuary, it meddles in the tiny movements of mortals not out of care for their strategy, but for the opportunity to watch so many of them scatter at once.[4]

Biography[]

In 1271, Shumbeel was summoned by the Cult of Terror to free the Voidwound. Before he could finish breaking their cage, he was bound by Nisza, whose coven was responsible for maintaining the seal on the Voidwound. With the help of the Shard-seeker, Shumbeel was made to retreat.[5]

Later, Shumbeel was again summoned by the Cult of Terror when they besieged Stormpoint Keep. He began harassing the keep's forces, barraging them with lightning blasts, as well as attacking the Shanties.[6] Shumbeel was finally summoned to the peak of Stormpoint Keep to fight the Shard-seeker, where he was killed.[2]

It is implied that the skin and fur of Shumbeel was used to make armor.[7][8]

In-game[]

Shumbeel first appears in "the Chainbreakers" quest. He is briefly seen in "Terror's Tide" and "Breaking the Siege". He is one of the bosses in "Bound for Eternity"
