The Shassar Sea is a desert located in far eastern Kehjistan, well past Caldeum.[1]
Lore[]
"Course I have. Didn't realize you had a death wish, though. There's a reason no one takes the bounties there, am I right?"
- An adventurer and Captain Rehm(src)
Shassar is a dry land, where food and water are in short supply.[2] It has been indicated that the Shassar Sea was once an actual body of water, but if so, this ceased to be the case.[3] The ruins of docks and boats can still be found on the sands.[4] During the reign of King Fahir, Shassar was far from the wasteland it would eventually become.[5]
Sandstorms are a potential threat for anyone traveling across the desert.[6] It is said that the three most dangerous killers in Shassar are scorpion stings, snake venom, and time itself.[7]
A number of desert gangs vie for control of Shassar, foremost among them the Sand Scorpions and Amber Blades.[8]
Early History[]
The Shassar Sea was once home to the Fahiran Empire,[9] and at the time of its fall, was ruled by King Fahir.[10] After his death, the people turned on each other, trying to claim his riches.[11] His scepter, the symbol of his authority, was split into three parts, which appears to have hindered his subjects' ability to have found an heir.[10]
By the 13th century, the Shassar civilization had collapsed,[3] its people scattered throughout the land.[12] Shassar itself turned into a wasteland.[5]
Recent History[]
Over the years, many adventurers came to Shassar, seeking to loot its tombs. However, none of them made it out alive.[13]
By 1270, the Shassar Sea had a grim reputation.[14] Westmarch sought to trade with Shassar's merchants, but the lacuni and other monsters that prowled the sands hindered this. It offered bounties to clear them out,[15] but adventurers in Westmarch refused to take bounties that would take them to the region.[14] Vataos terrorized Shassar's scattered people. However, with the reconstituted Scepter of Fahir coming into the hands of Tabri (leader of the Amber Blades), she declared that she had the right to rule the land, and a symbol through which Shassar's people could rally behind, against Vataos.[12] Peth later stated that the Blades intended to retake Shassar.[16] Despite this, the Blades' attempts at retaking Shassar were stymied by the lacuni, who attacked one of their villages, killing dozens and causing the survivors to flee. Unable to retake it on their own, the Blades requested aid from any able-bodied fighters in Westmarch.[17]

Trivia[]
- The description of Shassar as an "old kingdom" (of Kehjistan) may be inspired by the Old Kingdom of Egypt. Similarities can be found, such as the desert landscape, and Fahir's pharoah-esque attire and deification.
- In "Curse of the Scepter," Tabri exclaims "thank the sun." This may indicate sun deification within Shassar.
