This skill causes thrown javelins to deal poison damage and leave a trail of poison clouds. It does not affect melee strikes.
Generally, without a high-level Pierce, targeting just near enemies rather than directly is more effective. When the poison javelin misses, it will just pass by them, but still leave a poison cloud which can still poison the nearby monster. This becomes less of an issue with Pierce, which causes thrown javelins to pass through enemies and maintain their poison trail.
While Plague Javelin does significantly more damage per second, and has a large area of effect (especially compounded with Pierce), it has a long delay; Poison Javelin deals greater numbers of total damage over a much longer period of time, but has a far shorter delay so its area of effect trails can be placed more often.
Generally, against groups of opponents that are likely to run away (e.g. Fallen), this skill is better than Plague Javelin.
