Pit Vipers are a type of Claw Viper. They were found in the Northern Steppes, and were the foe of the Snake Tribe.[1]

A Pre-release Necromancer showcase video from 1999 December 15 shows that Pit Viper was named Poison Spitter and was located in the Swampy Pit.
