Nightmares are a specie of shadow-aligned demons whose origins can be traced back to the Black Mists that have covered parts of Mount Zavain since the end of the Zakarum Crusade.[1]

Lore[]

Like other demons, they come in a wide variety of shapes. Black Mists usually covers anywhere they gather in large numbers[2]. They have been shown to be harmed[3] or at least weakened[4] by light. Stronger nightmares can use shadow elemental attacks; usually in the form of spectral bolts[5][6], or as scything energy waves[5][7].Nightmares can gestate within undead animated by the Black Mists, and undead sufficiently infested with the mists can become nightmares in their own right.[8]

They get their name from their ability to invade the minds of Humans and feed on their nightmares[9] or visions[10].

History[]

At the end of the Zakarum Crusade, a desperate Patriarch of the Veradani unleashed an ancient evil sealed beneath the monastery against the Sons of Rakkis. The evil spread in the form of Black Mists that infected everyone in the area, drained them of essence and birthed nightmare demons from the stolen essence. The mists possessed the patriarch, transforming him into a gargantuan demon.[1]

Centuries later, other demons such as Dymdrail and Lilith have been seen commanding nightmares.[11]
