For the similarly named town, see Toraja.
"Torajan. The densest, most unknown, I've heard. Few folks there. Toraja is the only city, the people said to oil their skins black and file their teeth like daggers. Sounds like a delightful place to visit."

Nahantu

Nahantu is a jungle region of Sanctuary. To outsiders, it is known as Torajan,[1] the Torajan Jungles, or Toraja.[2]

The jungles of Nahantu

Wild and dangerous,[3] Nahantu lies south of Kehjistan,[2] and is the southernmost region of Estuar.[4] It encompasses immense, verdant, teeming jungles that span most of the southwestern expanse of the continent. Even to nearby Kehjistan, Nahantu is a strange and exotic place, filled with vibrant and dangerous flora and fauna that cannot be found anywhere else on Sanctuary.[2] Roots stretch across entire chasms.[3] Brilliantly-colored birds are found in the deep jungles, who flaunt their radiant plumage.[5]

With an average of over 400 inches per year, Nahantu has the largest rainforests in the known world. This huge expanse of jungle feeds the Argentek River, which is the longest, widest river in Sanctuary. Hundreds of smaller rivers and tributaries twist and turn their way through the lush tropical forests until they finally unite with the mighty Argentek. Herbalists and alchemists revere the rainforest environment for its ecological diversity. Until around the Darkening of Tristram, these sages would come from far and wide to study and collect the rare plants and animals that make their homes here.[6] The wet, humid atmosphere of these rainforests is an environment perfect for fly and mosquito larvae. Pools of stagnant water gather after the frequent rain storms, providing excellent spots for the adults of these species to lay their eggs.[7] Because of the use of magic in the Mage Clan Wars, some flora and fauna of the jungles grew to massive sizes due to the adverse effects of magical energy. Trees and vines would grow to unusual size, rivers and swamps would appear overnight, and once innocuous creatures would gain dangerous abilities with an appetite to match.[8]

The jungle plays a key role in the culture of Nahantu's peoples.[9] They are divided into numerous warring tribes.[10]

History[]

The jungle reclaims ruins

Nahantu's jungles have cultivated many civilizations, many of which have been lost to the annals of time. Deckard Cain claimed that the Umbaru tribes of the Teganze region remain the exception,[2] but this is incorrect, as the Tusked Lords also make their home here.[11] The Opaya also inhabit(ed) the jungles.[12] After the destruction of the Worldstone, sightings of hellish creatures were reported from the jungles.[13]

Prior to the collapse of the Eastern Empire, Nahantu was considered part of Kehjistan.[6] In the 1270s, few people made the trek into Nahantu.[14]

During the Great Enmity, Kehjistan's borders shrunk to encompass only the Borderlands,[15] meaning Nahantu was no longer under its control. Temples dedicated to the Triune and Prime Evils were established/appropriated during this period.[16] The First Khazra began abducting humans who strayed into their territory.[4]

In 1336, Neyrelle entered Nahantu while carrying Mephisto's soulstone. His corruption spread from the soulstone, affecting the jungle, and creating the Hollows.[17] His corruption began to spread into the Spirit Realm itself, striking fear into the hearts of the people who dwelt in Nahantu.[9] Mephisto's hatred spread from Nahantu across Estuar,[18] leaving monsters twisted by his influence in Hatred's wake.[19]

In-game[]

Diablo II[]

Nahantu first appeared in Act III of Diablo II, though the name was not applied at the time, and was simply referred to as "Kehjistan." From an in-universe standpoint, this is explained by Kehjistan's borders at the time encompassing Nahantu.

Diablo IV[]

Nahantu as it appears in Diablo IV

Nahantu is one of the six main geographic areas that can be explored in Diablo IV, with its introduction in the expansion Vessel of Hatred.[1] The area features new towns, dungeons, and strongholds. Players will encounter warring tribes as they traverse the region.[20] In-game, Nahantu is as large as Scosglen,[21] and is divided into six explorable regions. Four of them are jungle-themed, while the other two are red-rock canyon themed.[4]

Nahantu was the last region of Estuar to be added to the game.[4]
