Mounts are a new feature in Diablo IV, added for the very first time in the Diablo series.
In-game[]
Mounts are unlocked through the game's primary questline, specifically upon reaching Act IV and completing the quest Mount: Donan's Favor. They are used as a means of transportation for traversing across long distances in the open world to quicker reach one's targets. The mount's speed is variable depending on cursor distance, and three charges that make the horse sprint for a short distance.[1] Dismounting puts it on a 10 second-cooldown.
While mounted, the character's aggro range is greatly decreased, meaning that monsters will not attack on sight, only if the player approaches them. While mounted, a "fear gauge" is displayed on the horseriding's UI; monster attacks will fill the gauge, and if completed, the player is forced to dismount.[1] If this happens, the mount is then put on a 30-second cooldown.
Mounts can be customized via their armor, saddle, and can have trophies dangling from them (said trophies including severed heads).[2] Mount trophies can be attached to the saddle or the mount's flank.[3] Different types of mounts exist, including demonic horses, flayed horses, and undead horses.[2] Mounts can be obtained in a variety of ways, such as by completing puzzles, finding hidden locations, slaying certain monsters,[1] or completing certain quests.[4] Once a mount and customizations are unlocked, they can be used in all game modes for any and all characters that the player creates.[citation needed] All horse variations, as well as armor, and trophy customization, are aesthetic only, and do not change the way that players play in any way.
All character classes have special dismounting attacks that allow them to perform a special offensive action the very moment they leap off their mounts.[2] Players can collect herbs, ores, and other items while mounted.[3]

The developers decided against jousting or fighting from horseback, as it did not feel true to the series.[1] Furthermore, the mount's speed across terrain was supposed to be altered by collecting different types of horseshoes, and hoof plates.[6]
