Batum was a mercenary employed by the Ashwold Guard.
In 1270, the Guard employed him to track down the leader of grave robbers that were plundering Ashwold Cemetery—Gorman. He located him at a camp, but Gorman refused to come out unless it was safe. However, the grave robbers created a signal by burning the poison glands of scorpions; a fact that he realized could be used to draw Gorman out of hiding, and in doing so, kill him. He asked a hero/group of heroes to recover the glands, so that a false signal could be created. The hero(s) succeeded, and Gorman gave them a share of the profit, saying that they'd make a fine mercenary/mercenaries.[1]
