Biography[]
Cathan and her fellow Horadrim imbued their essence in a crystal during the Dark Exile, storing their memories for future Horadrim.
In 1270, the Shard-seeker awoke Cathan's memory, under direction by the Memory of Iben Fahd.[1]
In-game[]
The Memory of Cathan appears as part of the Legacy of the Horadrim system.
Her in-game description is simply "Cathan," but has been called "Memory of" here to distinguish her from her progenitor.
Tale[]
Before false pilgrims insisted on ornate prayer chambers and "donations," the annals of Zakara were read freely in the city of Tuvant. Even as a girl, I could see the city's changes were not always just, so I made a vow to live simply, without wealth. I left to become a farmhand, and my neighbors worked beside me for decades, until they found gold.
- Level 10
They discovered a rich vein in the cave behind my field. I remember their excitement... then their confusion when I refused to have the gold mined, and asked my husband to board the cave shut. I knew what came of unexpected riches. My neighbors did not. After a few days, avaricious youths followed me, jeering me every time I passed through the common land.
The whole hamlet was aware that I held to a vow of humility. I told my neighbors that, as Akarat had said, "true richness is richness of spirit." They maligned my words. Some threatened to claim the gold by force. I began to doubt--was it my place to keep others humble? Could my spareness drive them to evil as surely as any wealth?
- Level 20
Traders from Tuvant came seeking to buy a claim; hearing that I would not bend, they spoke with my husband, Okor, and my daughter Joricia. When they had left, Joricia said I could not make her keep my oath. I would accept the traders' offers, she told me, or she would go to the cave and take her due. My husband, with whom I had been bound in love, not faith, nodded. I was heartbroken even before I refused.
- Level 30
My family left without saying goodbye, having shattered the boards blocking the cave and taken what little of the gold they could chip away. The next day, my neighbors arrived at my shanty at dawn, demanding to know why I had broken my promise. They called me craven, forked-tongue; they raised axes, threatened to burn my home, and insisted upon "their" gold.
