Mehrwen along with Ksathra, was the last sister priest-empresses of Pelghain.

Biography[]

Mehrwen was fond of introspection. She believed that knowledge could be found in understanding the essence of your soul as it has always been, and wisdom in accepting what it will become.[2] She also taught her people about purification of the soul; that it should occur first alone, over days. Then, purification should occur "in the sight of others," over the course of a life's ordeals.[3]

As the power of the empresses winnowed, they argued over the direction to take their people. Ksathra suggested uplifting a few so that they could shepherd their fellows, which Mehrwen said that it would be better to provide a small amount of power to all, that none may claim dominion.[4] It is widely believed that Ksathra struck the first blow in anger.[5] The result was a civil war that destroyed the empire, and left the Cold Isles beset by storm and sea.[6]

It is believed that while mortally injured, Mehrwen swam away from Ksathra to the Spiral, where people could find and praise her in death.[1] Her dying breath supposedly formed the mists that shroud the region. The purest and bravest Tempests are sent on dangerous voices to breathe in the mists, hear the whispering voices of an earlier age, and grow in knowledge and power to command sea and sky as empresses such as Mehrwen did.[6]

Presently, Mehrwen is worshipped by the people of the Cold Isles, in tall spires with roofs open to the air, as if inviting all to join in her rule.[7] However, the legend of Xekorendaag states that the empresses' fury cursed the Isles so long as their descendants remained on Pelghain. When the people began to brave the deluges and hurricanes, arrogantly building tall cities and monuments, a great serpent drove into their settlements, consuming families and carving the isles apart as it did. Reproached, the people moved their settlements away from the capital, and the serpent faded to memory.[8]
