- Lord Martanos(src)
Lord Martanos was a crusader and a captain in the Zakarum during the Zakarum Crusade.
Biography[]
A once-noble holy warrior of Zakarum, Martanos fell to hatred during a campaign to conquer Ivgorod in Rakkis's name. While many of the Zakarum faithful were suborned by demons, Martanos's zeal and desire to convert unbelievers saw his aims align naturally with Mephisto — and his soul slip into damnation with ease.[2]
Zakarum Crusade[]
Lord Martanos was the leader of the Brotherhood of Light—a regiment sect of the Zakarum.[1] During the Zakarum Crusade, he was tasked with purging Zavain of heretics. His army murdered and pillaged their way through the mountain, with the Veradani monastery being the final obstacle. He slaughtered the monks there without mercy.[3]
By an unknown means, he gained a demonic taint for more power. He was able to easily overpower the patriarch of the monastery but was trapped on an isolated peak. He perished with the remaining invading force and the monks by the mist that was released by the Ancient Nightmare. His body was recovered and buried in the Zakarum Cemetery at Mount Zavain.[3]
Undeath[]
- Lord Martanos' spirit(src)
Martanos' hatred borne from zealotry ensured his spirit was unable to move on, and his hatred contributed to the darkness that tainted the region. Two centuries later, his spirit was roused when a young Rakkisguard attempted to purify the darkness.[4] In time, he was able to resurrect as a skeleton, but was later killed by the Shard-seeker(s).
In-game[]
Undead Lord Martanos is a world boss that can be seen at his grave in Mount Zavain. An alive Martanos is seen as a mini-boss in the quest, Forgotten Nightmares.
Combat[]
Martanos fights using a flail and a tower shield. He can also use Spinning Shield and a variant of Condemn.
Trivia[]
- Martanos' corruption likely originated from his left pauldron which was cursed. Originally, it had a dark blue miasma. After it started twisting his flesh, it gained a rocky appearance similar to partly cooled magma and spikes started growing from it. After he resurrected, it lost its magma-like appearance, but remained spiked.
