Legendary Gems are gems introduced in the patch 2.1 of Diablo III, that are only socketable in amulets and rings (except the Gem of Ease, which can only be socketed into a weapon, and Helm-only Red Soul Shard). Most of these gems can only drop from Rift Guardians in Greater Rifts, though one can be found as a drop from Greed in the Treasure Realm. In addition to the gems being unique equipped and account bound, any one character can not even receive any gem that they already have in their possession, including the shared stash. The gems are dropped at Rank 0 and can be upgraded by speaking with Urshi. Legendary gems do not work when equipped on a follower.

Legendary Gems are gems introduced in patch 2.1 of Diablo III. Each Legendary Gem has two unique powers. One is unlocked upon dropping, and can be strengthened by upgrading; the second is a fixed bonus that is unlocked when the gem is upgraded to Rank 25.

  +
Except for two gems, they can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings (the Gem of Ease can only be socketed into a weapon, while the Red Soul Shard can only be socketed into a Helm). Like all gems, Legendary Gems are account bound; they are also unique equipped.
The Legendary Gems are not account-unique, but a character will never get a gem that they already have in inventory, equipped on follower, equipped on themselves, or in the shared stash, or socketed into any item in any of the listed places.

  +
Legendary Gems only drop from Rift Guardians in Greater Rifts (except for Boon of the Hoarder and the Red Soul Shard, which drops only from Greed in the Treasure Realm, and killing the Dark Lord in the Darkening of Tristram event respectively). As a rule, a Rift Guardian will drop a randomly-selected gem if and only if a character does not already have access to all Legendary Gems, where access means that the gem is: (1) equipped by the character, (2) in the character's inventory (socketed or not), or (3) in the shared stash (socketed or not). Gems equipped by or in the inventory of another character do not count. Only gems for which the character does not have access can drop.
The gems will only drop at character level 70, but can be used at any level by other characters on the same account.

  +
Gems always drop at Rank 0 and can be upgraded by speaking with Urshi. As of patch 2.4.0, the Rank of a gem appears in inventory or any interface panel tied to them.
There are currently 22 Legendary Gems (Patch 2.4.0).

  +
Gems will only drop at character level 70, but have no level requirement and can be used by any character on that account. Legendary Gems can be equipped by a follower, but have no effect.
As of patch 2.4, Legendary Gems also show their Rank in inventory or any interface panel tied to them.

These gems can be upgraded by speaking with Urshi, who will appear on every level of a Greater Rift after the Rift Guardian has been defeated in time. It does not cost anything to upgrade the gem. The blue property on the gem is the only property that will be upgraded. The upgrade success rate will increase as the Greater Rift level increases, but it also decreases with the rank of the gem, i.e. one will need higher Tier to even have a chance to upgrade the high-level gems.
+
Urshi will offer the chance to upgrade Legendary Gems if the Rift Guardian is defeated in time. The blue property on the gem is the only property that will be upgraded.
  +
After a successful Rift, Urshi will always offer three upgrade chances for free; as of patch 2.4.3, an additional chance is offered if the character did not die during the Rift (Hardcore characters will always get this extra attempt). Furthermore, one can pay gold to Empower the rift; an empowered rift, if cleared, grants one more chance, so the maximum number of upgrade chances is five.
  +
  +
The upgrade success rate is determined by taking the Greater Rift Tier and subtracting the Legendary Gem Rank. The difference determines the success rate as follows:
  +
  +
*+10 or higher: 100% chance
  +
  +
*+9: 90% chance
  +
  +
*+8: 80% chance

*–4: 4% chance

  +
*–5: 2% chance
The maximum number of attempts Urshi can offer per run is three (+1 if the Rift is empowered and another +1 if cleared without dying), and each is either successful (+1 rank), or failed (nothing happens). As of patch 2.4.3, finishing a Rift without dying will also grant +1 extra attempt, to a maximum of 5 (Hardcore characters will always get an extra attempt).

  +
*–6: 1% chance
A gem's chance to upgrade will be guaranteed if the difficulty level of the rift is at least 10 greater than the rank of the gem. When the differences between the rift and gem reach below 10, the chance of successful upgrading decreases, first to 90% (9 ranks above), then 80% (8 ranks above), 70% (7 ranks above) and 60% (0-6 ranks above). If a gem's level is higher than that of the Greater Rift's difficulty level, then the chances of a successful upgrading are cut in half for every rank (30%, 15%, 7.5%, 3.75%, etc), and become 0% when the difference reaches 7 ranks.

  +
*–7 or lower: 0% chance
In other words, to even get a chance to get the rank 25 bonus, the player must be able to clear a rank 18 rift. To get good chances (higher than 30%), the player must be able to clear a rank 24 rift, i.e. be geared well enough to efficiently farm on Torment VI. To have a 100% chance to gain the level that grants the secondary bonus of the gem, they need to clear a level 34 rift or above.

  +
In other words, to have any chance of unlocking the rank 25 bonus, the player must clear a Rift of at least Tier 18.
When the gem reaches rank 25, it will gain a secondary power, which is not empowered by further rank increases.

  +
A few gems have a limit; when that limit is reached, Urshi will stop offering the chance to upgrade that gem. The remaining gems have no stated cap, but it is difficult to level most gems much beyond Rank 100.
Note that while most gems have no cap (and therefore can be upgraded endlessly, should their owner be good enough to clear a rift of high enough rank), some have a limit, usually around rank 125-150, and cannot be upgraded afterwards. However, most of these gems have a cap that is not obtainable by normal means.

Revision as of 08:19, 30 August 2019

Legendary Gems are gems introduced in patch 2.1 of Diablo III. Each Legendary Gem has two unique powers. One is unlocked upon dropping, and can be strengthened by upgrading; the second is a fixed bonus that is unlocked when the gem is upgraded to Rank 25.

Except for two gems, they can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings (the Gem of Ease can only be socketed into a weapon, while the Red Soul Shard can only be socketed into a Helm). Like all gems, Legendary Gems are account bound; they are also unique equipped.

Gems always drop at Rank 0 and can be upgraded by speaking with Urshi. As of patch 2.4.0, the Rank of a gem appears in inventory or any interface panel tied to them.

Gems will only drop at character level 70, but have no level requirement and can be used by any character on that account. Legendary Gems can be equipped by a follower, but have no effect.

Unreleased Gems

Upgrading

Urshi will offer the chance to upgrade Legendary Gems if the Rift Guardian is defeated in time. The blue property on the gem is the only property that will be upgraded.

The upgrade success rate is determined by taking the Greater Rift Tier and subtracting the Legendary Gem Rank. The difference determines the success rate as follows:

 • +10 or higher: 100% chance
 • +9: 90% chance
 • +8: 80% chance
 • +7: 70% chance
 • 0 to +6: 60% chance
 • –1: 30% chance
 • –2: 15% chance
 • –3: 8% chance
 • –4: 4% chance
 • –5: 2% chance
 • –6: 1% chance
 • –7 or lower: 0% chance

In other words, to have any chance of unlocking the rank 25 bonus, the player must clear a Rift of at least Tier 18.

A few gems have a limit; when that limit is reached, Urshi will stop offering the chance to upgrade that gem. The remaining gems have no stated cap, but it is difficult to level most gems much beyond Rank 100.
