In Diablo Immortal, Legendary Gems can be upgraded at the Apprentice Jeweler.

Upgrading requires a certain amount of gem power and/or lower-ranked copies of the gem.

When upgrading unbound gems, all the materials used must be unbound for the resulting gem to be unbound.

Gem Power[]

Many upgrade steps require gem power, which is a value associated with each legendary gem. The base value for 1-star legendary gems is 1, for 2-star legendary gems it's 4, and for 5-star legendary gems it's 32. During an upgrade, the gem power used in the upgrade is added to the gem power of the resulting gem.

Gem Fragments exist as a quality of life feature in case you have enough gem power but can't piece together the exact amount of gem power. In this case, using more than the required gem power will return the excess gem power in the form of gem fragments. Gem fragments exist in bound and unbound varieties, with the latter resulting from using an unbound gem as an upgrade material and having excess gem power. Unbound gem fragments can't be sold on the market but still count as unbound materials when upgrading unbound gems.

Upgrade requirements[]

In the following tables, rank 1 is included as obtaining the gem itself which is not an actual upgrade. For higher grades, Total GP indicates how much gem power the gem is worth when used as material for other gems, while the Total GP+R1 column indicates how much gem power (made of arbitrary gems) plus rank 1 copies of the gem are necessary. For 1- and 2-star legendary gems the rank 1 copies are not a big deal since it is possible to craft any one of your choice using Telluric Fragments, but for 5-star ones this is much more important as the only way to pick the one you want is by crafting from Telluric Pearls which is a slow process, or buying from the market where the most sought-after ones will have the highest prices. Since 5-star gems need higher-rank copies to upgrade, it is not obvious how many rank 1 copies you need without doing some calculation, hence these values are included in the table.

5-star Legendary Gems[]

The individual star rating of the gem doesn't matter for the upgrade costs.

Power Extraction[]

Legendary Gems can undergo Extraction, which turns the gem "dormant" by removing the stored Gem Power into Gem Fragments. A dormant gem can be socketed and can activate Awakening, but does not provide Resonance or bonuses. A dormant auxiliary gem works as well as an active one if used on an active main gem.

The Gem Power inherent in the rank 1 copies cannot be extracted; for example, a 5-star rank 4 gem contains 225 Gem Power and 3 rank 1 copies, but extracting it only yields the 225 Gem Power. A dormant gem can be reactivated by Infusing it, which requires the same amount of Gem Power in Gem Fragments and/or gems, as does an upgrade. It can also be reactivated by Transferring, which is similar, but some or all of the Gem Power is provided by extracting another gem. (Note that if the extracted Gem Power is used in 1-star or 2-star gems, that power can only be recovered by destroying the 1-star or 2-star gem; the duplicate copies are lost.)

Gem Power Contribution[]

5-star Legendary Gems receive Gem Power as contribution from the embedded Resonance gems. This means even a dormant gem can provide its effect as long as the Resonane gems have a total Gem Power that would be enough to infuse it. This saves Gem Power when both upgrading and using resonance gems in the expensive 5-star Legendary Gems.[1]

Star Rating increase[]

This applies to 5-star Legendary Gems. The star rating of a gem can be increased by using a higher-rated copy during an upgrade. The gem must be used in the copy slot, not as Gem Power. For example, a 2/5* rank 3 Blood-Soaked Jade can be turned into a 4/5* one by using a 4/5* rank 1 copy during upgrading, either during normal or incremental upgrade.

History[]

Unbound gem fragments and unbound ranked-up gems were added in the November 9, 2022 update.

Progressive upgrade was introduced in the September 21, 2023 update.

Extraction, infusion and transfer were introduced in the November 09, 2023 update.

Upon its introduction, only 5-star Legendary Gems could be extracted. This was extended to all Legendary Gems in the December 13, 2024 update. The same update also reduced the requirements of incremental upgrade for 5-star Legendary Gems from rank 5 to rank 4.

Originally incremental upgrade didn't immediately increase the star rating of the gem, the full upgrade cycle had to be completed. Since the January 22, 2025 update, the star rating increases instantly.
