Karamat's Reach

Karamat's Reach was a Malignant Tunnel in Diablo IV, exclusive to Season of the Malignant.

Lore

Karamat's Reach was a Zakarum outpost in Hawezar, though according to Cormond, the outpost was a pre-existing structure appropriated by Zakarum rather than built by the church itself. It was a base of operations for the Zakarum Inquisition, which conducted experiments with Cages of Binding on Malignant/Malignant-like creatures. Those present reported to Orbei Monastery. The experiments progressed to the point where they could extract Malignant Hearts, but as before, it always resulted in the subject's death. The experiments apparently had a theological bent to them as well, as they sought to remove "the darkness from the light." After 112 days of experiments, the inquisitors created a perfect cage that simply killed the subject, and in so doing, spare them from the fate of malignancy.

The Wanderer and Cormond explore the outpost

Karamat's Reach was buried and forgotten, the only means of entry being the conduction of a ritual. For a century, no one tried to explore the outpost, not even the Crusaders. However, in 1336, Cormond and the Wanderer entered the outpost, where they found the spirits of the dead within the outpost, along with an advanced Cage of Binding they could use to kill Varshan.

Karamat's Reach was explored in the "Ruins of the Faith" quest.

Points of Interest

Within the outpost, old Inquisition logs could be found:

• Inquisition Log - Day 34: Another fell to darkness today. The ritual is fatal to all whose hearts can be captured, if we're even able to capture the heart at all. We work tirelessly. Even if I wished for sleep, the cries are unrelenting.

• Inquisition Log - Day 68: The days blend with new rituals and tests. Though our cages now capture the hearts of monsters, the rituals conclude with death. I can't understand this defiance of Akarat's light. There must be an answer.

• Inquisition Log - Day 103: Orbei has demanded my findings. They believe our experiments a favor. It is true, there is no separation of the darkness from the light while the being lives, but we have proven it possible once the heart is captured! We just need more time.

• Inquisition Log - Day 112: It's over. We've created the perfect cage to kill these monsters, and only kill. May no more succumb to this fate. Akarat guide us all.
