Jirandai

Jirandai

Jirandai is a town in the Dry Steppes.

Lore[]

Jirandai is located in the south of the Steppes, at the border with Kehjistan.[1] It is run by the Jirandai Mercantile Council.[2] A canyon splits Jirandai in two, with barricades on the northern side, while the city proper is on the southern side. Heavy cranes lift over the edge, poised to lift cargo from the canyon below.[3] Travelers and merchants light candles at the town's Yinsuk Shrine, the candles burning through day and night.[4]

History[]

Jirandai has its roots in the time of the Zakarum, when they were at the height of their power, and a church was built on the town's future location.[5] After Zakarum collapsed, Jirandai was built on the bones of the Old Empire.[6] Merchants became the new rulers of Jirandai, but left the Zakarum church intact, as it gave Jirandai's rulers a sense of legitimacy.[5] The Yinsuk Tree was preserved and the Yinsuk Shrine built around it.[4]

Jirandai had a strong trading relationship with Caldeum. After Caldeum was sealed off, trade with Kejistan slowed, but remained steady.[6]

In/around 1336, the town suffered repeated attacks from the Cannibals[6] from the north.[7] The town's merchants hired whoever they could to protect the town.[8] In some attacks, the Cannibals made it over the barricades before being cut down.[7]

In-game[]

Jirandai is located in the far south of the Dry Steppes zone in Diablo IV. If playing the campaign in order, it will usually be the last Dry Steppes town encountered.

Points of Interest[]

  • Canyon Crane: Heavy cranes lift over the edge, poised to lift cargo from the canyon below. The Merchants take their security very seriously.
  • Church Doors: A once-mighty church of the Zakarum, built at the height of their empire. Even ruined, it lends a sense of legitimacy to the new rulers of Jirandai-the merchants of the Dry Steppes.
  • Dead Cannibals: Cannibals have been testing the city's northern defenses. These got well past the barricades before they fell.
  • Mercenary Weapons: Swords, pikes, and spears from throughout the East, scarred by heavy use. The Merchants have hired whoever they can to protect Jirandai.
  • Notice Board: "To all residents and visitors - Signal the watchman when approaching the northern barricade, and cross at your own risk! We are not responsible for your safety beyond our borders." - Jirandai Mercantile Council
  • Travelers Beware!: Legends speak of a barbarian warrior who's bloodthirst was so ferocious, he even terrified the cannibal tribes. Zarozar's spirit still haunts Desolation's Reach, searching for a worthy challenge.
  • Yinsuk Tree: Preserved long ago by the builders of Jirandai, this tree stands at the center of the Yinsuk Shrine. The prayer candles burn day and night, lit by travelers and merchants alike.
