Izual is a fallen Archangel, trapped within a demonic creature by the Prime Evils. Players encounter Izual in Diablo II. Izual is the main quest objective of the Fallen Angel (quest) in Act IV of Diablo II.
Background
From the Crystal Arch at the very heart of the High Heavens to the arcane Hellforge of the Underworld, the warriors of the eternal realms pursue victory in their timeless conflict. The legendary deeds of the heroes of the realms beyond elicit both veneration and insight.
The greatest of these heroes was Izual, lieutenant to the Archangel Tyrael and bearer of the angelic runeblade Azurewrath. He once led a fierce attack upon the Hellforge as the creation of the dark demonblade Shadowfang was nearing completion. During the battle that ensued, Izual was overcome by legions of Chaos and was lost to the Darkness.
Izual now remains as a dark, tortured soul who is trapped within the forsaken realms of Hell. Despite his valor and strength, his form was twisted by the perverse powers of the Prime Evils. They forced him to betray his own kind and give up Heaven's most guarded secrets. Izual became a corrupt shadow of his former self; a fallen angel trusted neither by Heaven nor Hell.
For his transgressions, the spirit of Izual was bound within the form of a terrible creature that was summoned from the Abyss. His maddened spirit has resided within that tortured husk for many ages now. Although he now certainly no longer carries the weapon Azurewrath, Izual still possesses great strength and powers within his new form. He is a threat to any who would oppose him, and in his current state, it is certain that he will see you as opposition.
During the events of Diablo II, Tyrael tasks the heroes with releasing Izual from his torment by destroying the demon holding his soul. Tyrael believed Izual's spirit redeemed, but the Archangel Itherael noted that the harmonic resonance that once was Izual has not emerged from the Crystal Arch...
Tips and Other Additional Information
In the game, players encounter Izual on the Plains of Despair. Upon approaching him, the quest log should appear and Izual can be heard grunting Save yourself!
Though he is bound within a demon, Izual mainly uses melee and Cold attacks, so it's useful to have some Cold Resistance. His Frost Nova can be a nuisance to deal with and Izual has a lot of health. However, he has no other special abilities, making the encounter a pretty straightforward fight. In Normal, Frost Nova has a fifteen second Chill duration, which increases to eighteen and twenty-two in Nightmare and Hell respectively. As stated previously, there is Cold damage added to his attacks. In Normal, the addition is 7-15 with a two second Chill and increases to 24-39 with three seconds and 49-78 with four seconds in Nightmare and Hell, respectively.
After his demon form is defeated, Izual's spirit is released and players can proceed to talk with the fallen angel, completing the quest. Izual gloatingly reveals that it was he who first tricked Tyrael into using the soulstones to defeat the Prime Evils. Whether this was before or after his corruption is unclear.
Diablo III
At Blizzcon 2011, Izual was confirmed to appear in Diablo III. Fortunately, he does, and - as always - he is a miniboss during the quest Prime Evil.
In-game
Izual appears as a mini-boss in Act IV of Diablo III. He appears much the same as his previous incarnation - despite the apparent destruction of his previous demonic host. Izual has an affinity for cold magic.
Personality and Traits
Though once a radiant and brave creature of light, Izual has fallen to utter darkness. He is a dark and brooding creature, making crude and bitter remarks. He seems to have no remorse or pity for his part in the Sin War.
Trivia
- Izual's model is almost identical to his Diablo II model.
Quotes
- "Save yourself!"
- "Tyrael was a fool to have trusted me! You see, it was I who told Diablo and his brothers about the Soulstones and how to corrupt them. It was I who helped the Prime Evils mastermind their exile to your world. The plan we set in motion so long ago cannot be stopped by any mortal agency. Hell itself is poised to spill forth into your world like a tidal wave of blood and nightmares. You and all your kind...are doomed".

- "You failed again Tyreal, the corruption cannot be stopped!" (Diablo 3,In combat)
