Itherael

Itherael in the Book of Cain

"I am Itherael, Archangel of Fate. It is my duty to record what is, and what will be within the Scroll of Fate. But you, nephalem — you are not in the Scroll, your fate is unwritten."
- Itherael

Itherael is the Archangel of Fate of the ruling Angiris Council, formerly thought to be the Archangel of Balance, described as an Angel clad in grey.

At times showing neither male nor female traits in his unique aspect, Itherael is an angel who remains neutral no matter how biased an argument is, and a silent thinker who broods over any problem to reach a relatively neutral solution.

Itherael is the keeper of Talus'ar, the Scroll of Fate. He presides over the Library of Fate, where angel ascetics divine possible futures from fragments of the Crystal Arch.

Knowledge of the future grants power over the present. For this reason, Itherael, the archangel of Fate, is a vital member of the Council. He alone possesses the ability to decipher the threads of destiny woven in the celestial Scroll of Fate. His boundless sight grants him perspective others cannot fully comprehend. - Diablo III

History

When Sanctuary was discovered, he was among the three who supported the hidden world's existence. He reasoned that the humans, while being the spawn of Demons, had the potential to be even fouler than the Demons themselves, were also borne of Angels, and therefore had also the potential to serve the Light in ways surpassing that of the Council themselves.

Notably, among the members of the Angiris Council, Itherael is closest to Auriel, Archangel of Hope.

Quotes

From The Veiled Prophet

"I say it is time to vote", Imperius rumbled, utterly ignoring him.
"Let it be so.", interjected a gray-clad angel who seemed neither male nor female in aspect, "Let this be done."
Auriel leaned back in clear disappointment. Imperius, on the other hand, appeared satisfied. It was he who spoke to the next, the gray-clad one who had previously spoken. "Itherael, what verdict do you give?"
There was a pause, as if the fourth angel considered hard this question. "They are the get of Angels and Demons, with the taint and promise inherent ... Left to grow, they might become more monstrous than anything rising from the Burning Hells."
"And so they must be destroyed!", Imperius insisted.
Itherael raised a finger, "But they also have the greatest potential to serve the Light ... A potential that could surpass our own roles ... And so I vote that they be given their chance."
Mendeln's hopes rose. The angels were at a stalemate.
"No," agreed Mephisto, who seemed to take relish in watching Imperius's reaction when the angel realized that the pair agreed with each other. "That firstborn," he added, meaning Rathma, "and his kind ... they may remember, for they are few, and their day is already over. The rest, though ... if they are to grow, they must begin at the beginning."
From the background, Itherael responded, "He is correct."

Notes

  • While Itherael is described as seemingly neither male nor female in appearance, at least to the Edyrem humans who observe him, the Book of Cain consistently describes him as a male. He has an overall masculine in appearance in Diablo III: Wrath .
  • In Diablo III: Wrath, Itherael displayed an unusual combat style which involves him teleporting next to his opponents before finishing them off with an angelic runeblade. He rarely uses his wings (or feet) to move.
