Iosef was a monk of the Cathedral of Light.

Biography

In his own words, Iosef was once a "sinner." However, he was brought into the Cathedral by Prava.

Dusk on the Mountain

In 1336, Iosef was sent to Nevesk; the town's priest had stopped sending tithes, and Iosef was sent to find out why. As he neared the village, he sensed darkness around Icehowl Ruins. He entered the ruins to investigate and found the priest's body, along with demons. He fled and took shelter in Nevesk.

The Wanderer encounters Iosef and his captors

Nevesk had fallen under the sway of Lilith; Iosef ate their food, and in so doing was drugged. He rambled about the demons he'd seen in the ruins, and tried to bite off Oswen's fingers. He was found in this delirious state by the Wanderer, who subsequently departed to investigate the ruins. Afterwards, Iosef punched Oswen in the gut, escaped, and ran into the nearby woods.

Upon their return, the Wanderer was drugged by the villagers and wheeled away by Oswen to be sacrificed. Iosef snuck into the barn and killed Oswen using an iron rod. He then assisted in the ensuing fight with the villagers, though was wounded.

The Wanderer began to retch blood petals, much to Iosef's horror. The Wanderer explained that Oswen had force-fed the petals, and Iosef wondered how the villagers had learnt such a practice. He suggested that they enter the village chapel to find answers before he burnt it.

The Wanderer did so but passed out; Iosef dragged them outside and set fire to the chapel. The Wanderer explained that they'd had a vision of a horned demon that had corrupted the villagers. Iosef recognized the demon as Lilith, and ordered the Wanderer to seek out Lorath Nahr while he headed for Kyovashad.

A Cold and Iron Faith

Iosef made it to the Fractured Peaks in Kyovashad, where he reported the events in Nevesk to Prava. She blessed him in a ceremony, after which, the Wanderer arrived, reporting that Lorath had refused to travel to the town. Iosef was frustrated, but Prava entrusted the Wanderer with the task she'd intended for Lorath; to investigate a demon sighting at Gale Valley that matched Lilith's description.

The Wanderer later returned, explaining that they needed a blessing to cross a lake in order to pursue Lilith. Iosef directed them to Kor Valar in order to receive one from Prava. He rejoiced, claiming that everything was proceeding as Inarius had foretold, and that his return to Heaven was nigh.

At some point after his return to Kyovashad, Iosef told Voszalko about the Wanderer, and what had happened in Nevesk.

From the Wound Spilled

After Reverend Mother Prava denounced the Horadrim (even though Donan saved her life in the Burning Hells) Iosef was sent to kill Lorath Nahr. Iosef and the knights were quickly killed after.

Legacy

"if I could cast you into Hell myself, I would! But I know you would kill me for trying. Let no one say Iosef's martyrdom was without purpose!"

Voszalko was haunted by Iosef's death, which further drove his bitterness towards the Wanderer.

In Game

Iosef is an NPC in Diablo IV. He is first introduced in a shed in Nevesk during the "Dusk on the Mountain" quest. He later resides in the Cathedral of Light in Kyovashad.

Wanderer "Who is the Mother?"

"Do not call her that. It is a demon, Lilith. The gospel says that she will walk among the people posing as the Mother of Sanctuary. If she is here, it is humankind's own sin that has brought her."

Wanderer: "Who is this hermit?"

"He surrounds himself with dark knowledge. Tread carefully, and pray he has not fallen to Lilith as well."
