Use the Demonic Portal to travel to the Caverns of Penance
Caverns of Penance[]
- Tanwraig: (from a distance) Murderers! Violators! You will not get away with this!

An Afflicted is pursued, and captured by Sanctifiers
- Defeat the Sanctifiers
- Inari Sanctifier: Surrender. There is no other way.
- After killing the Sanctifiers

Talk to the rescued Lilin
- Class: Are you all right? What did they do to you?
- Tanwraig: Said... said they would care for the afflicted. But they gave us to the Sanctifiers!
They need to... let me back above. This... can't continue.
- A dark aura surround Tanwraig
- Tanwraig: Not... hmmm... what... what is...

Tanwraig transforms into a monster
- After killing the monster
- Class: The change seems irreversible. If what he said is true... it doesn't bode well for Tarzoine... or Rhyn.
- Descend deeper in the Caverns

The player arrives at a scene littered with corpses of the Afflicted
- Class
- Standard: Ugh... this was a massacre.
- Barbarian: This was a massacre.
- Read the letter
- Conservator's Note:
The transformation overtakes the afflicted seemingly at random. Some are lucid for weeks, and speak pleasantly with their Conservators before they simply... change. In the dark of the night, at the first rays of day... anywhere between. In its unpredictability lies the greatest burden of our escorts.
And the afflicted have not all lost their minds. Most know we are to take them to the colony, a place of safety... but not for whom it will be safe. When they begin to realize it, their protests, their wails... I will never forget them. I would set my charges loose, yet they have tried violence more than once, and might again.
The Sanctifiers have taken to striking the afflicted dead at the first signs of instability, rather than letting them live out the rest of their lives in peace. I cannot know if it is caution that guides them so... or cruelty. But the Prevailing Wind is firm. This affliction must spread no further. There is nowhere else for it to go. May Inarius protect and forgive us all.
—Conservator Toluthu,
Shining Diamond - Class: They were just... handing over the afflicted to be slain. I doubt there's a "colony."
- Descend deeper in the Caverns

A little further ahead, a Conservator and a detained Lilin stand before brambles
- Inari Conservator: We are nearly there. You can let your burdens go.

The Conservator burns the brambles, which reveals a path for them
- Burn the Brambles

The path is cleared
- Descend into the Caverns of Penance

In the distance, an Inari Conservator and a Lilin discuss. An Afflicted prisoner has just been delivered to the lilin
- Lowarch: When may I thank the Prevailing Wind in person?
- Inari Conservator: When the turmoil has passed. You are doing important work, but it must remain concealed for now.
- Lowarch: I would not want to test anyone's faith. We have gathered plenty.
- The duo teleport away
- Class: Ymuthrus is working with the Sanctifiers.

Continue to the Commingling Pit
- Class: Did losing the Pathstone transform these halls? Or were they always like this?
- Upon arriving at the Shrine of Lilith

There's a gathering of afflicted Lilin Sanctifiers, holding other Afflicted captive
- Lowarch: Mother Lilith. Accept this gift of your children.

The Sanctifiers sacrifice the captives by pushing them into the gorge below
- Porolum: Ymuthrus promised![1] You... (pushed into the gorge)
- After all captives have been sacrificed
- Lowarch: Restore balance to our home. Protect your children from the curse.

The Mother's Legacy is roused by the sacrifice, and grants the supplicants a boon
- Lowarch: Let the strength of the land live on in those who care for it.

Rhyn arrives at the shrine, dragging a struggling Tarzoine behind him
- Rhyn: I... brought you one of... the afflicted.(throws Tarzoine at Lowarch's feet)
(kneels in supplication) Please, shield me from the sickness.

Lowarch sacrifices Rhyn instead
- Tarzoine: No! Rhyn!

The Lilin supplicants close in on Tarzoine
- Kill the Lilin supplicants and their leader, Lowarch
- Lowarch: (upon defeat) Outsider, you are a blight upon creation, and I will cleanse you.
- Lowarch drops into the gorge, offering himself as a sacrifice

The sacrifice births a demon from his body
- After killing the Jurat, an altar for the Pathstone emerges from the ground

Check on Tarzoine
- Tarzoine: Rhyn.. why...
- Class:
- Standard: I had no idea... I'm sorry.
- Blood Knight: I wish I had known what was in his heart.
- Tarzoine: When I got sick... it must have terrified him. I should never have left.
- Class: You were trying to keep people safe. You can't blame yourself for something like this.
- Tarzoine: Every mistake a child makes belongs to their parents first.
- Class: Let me take you out of here. There's refuge nearby. I promise. Just give me a moment.
- Empower the Pathstone

The Mother's Legacy balances the Father's Legacy within the Pathstone
- Talk to Tarzoine
- Tarzoine: You restored it.
- Class: Outsiders don't only bring destruction.[2]
- Tarzoine: I am past faith in anyone's words. (sigh) But if you will fight for us, you have my support.
- Class: I will. Let's leave here.
- Leave Lilith's Shrine with Tarzoine

Outside the Shrine
- Class: Geherit has a hideaway nearby. Are you ready to go?
- Tarzoine: An Elder is with you? Do you trust her?
- Class: So far. She's been helping us restore the Pathstone. She intervened with Ymuthrus.
- Use the Portal Scroll to return to the Veiled Spring
Veiled Spring[]

The Veiled Spring is in ruins
- Class: What happened here?
- Tarzoine rushes to a downed Geherit
- Tarzoine: (checks on Geherit) She still breathes. They didn't kill her. (lays her down)

Speak with Tarzoine
- Class: How could they have found this place?
- Tarzoine: She is a wielder of Life's Fire. Perhaps they sensed her power.
- Class: This cult is not always cautious. They will leave clues to their aim, and I will find them.
- Tarzoine: Yes. I will help search.
- Search around for Clues
- Betrayal of the Lilin:
Morwith's theft of the Pathstone happened in a night, but it was not arbitrary. After the last famine, acrimony between Inari and Lilin blossomed. Disputes over rationing pushed us further apart.
Morwith was the highest-ranking Elder to voice leaving the Cradle behind. I learned later that the other Elders rebuked her, but did not remove her title, and thus she was able to convince many of her followers to escape the Cradle with her.
It was at this point that the Prevailing Wind changed. Ymuthrus said Morwith damned our home and our people with her selfishness, and that all Lilin who had advocated for fleeing the cradle were responsible. Perhaps he was right, but I remember the quiet that fell upon our refuge when Ymuthrus said that the punishment for such sin would be death.
Decorated Sanctifiers were selected to carry out the executions. Only one of their number dared question Ymuthrus openly. These were not Zatham's first defiant words—he had, years earlier, accused the Elders of punishing misdeeds unevenly between Inari and Lilin, though it was the sacred responsibility of the Conservators and Elders to assign such punishments, and his as a Sanctifier to carry them out.
Ymuthrus insisted he be judged in the rite of Purity's Penance. It did not kill Zatham, but burned the eyes from his face. Ymuthrus then permitted him exile. It was, by his standards, generous. - The Elder's Judgement:
The Fire of Life grew twisted... the affliction came, and Ymuthrus named it the punishment of the Lilin from the land itself. No matter that it burns us just as badly. No matter that we all share in the guilt.
The Prevailing Wind acted almost immediately to separate the afflicted from the rest of us... but he chose the Caverns of Penance as the place he sent them to await their cure. It reeks of his spite for the Lilin.
Worse, Ymuthrus has insisted that no one visit the afflicted. It has been months, and none have returned to us. The Conservators remain reticent about their participation.
Given the Prevailing Wind's viciousness toward anything he deems a threat to our stability... I feared the worst. I meditated on those of the afflicted whom I could name, and sang before the Veiled Spring.
Day after day, the spring sends me only blackness. He has taken their lives as surely as if he were their executioner.
- Examine the Spring
- Class: The spring has been completely destroyed.

Speak with Tarzoine
- Class: Her notes accuse Ymuthrus of murder. Of knowingly sending his people to die.[1]
- Tarzoine: He used Morwith's theft as an excuse to butcher my people.[3]
Why should he deal any differently with his own? - Class: Did you see any sign of Zatham?

A tremor shakes the hideaway
- Tarzoine: (staggers) What the— (falls down)
- Check on Tarzoine
- Class: Are you hurt?
- Tarzoine: No worse than before. That shock cannot have been far off. They lay siege to the Husk.
- Class: Will you be all right here? If they come back?
- Tarzoine: Of course. Go. I will try to revive her.
- Leave the Veiled Spring
