Gerlach was a resident of Stormpoint around the time the island was attacked by the Cult of Terror.

After the incident with the cult, Gerlach was desperate to leave the island. At a point, he discovered that some Cultists were venerating a glowing red gem. Knowing that a gem like that would fetch a good price, he devised a plan with a friend to steal the gem — he would distract the Cultists, while Franskie would steal the gem and send a signal after he succeeded.[1]
Instead of doing his part, Gerlach went to wait at a corner for Franskie's signal, which did not come. He employed the help of an adventurer to help him steal the gem. After dispatching the nearby cultists, the duo noticed a dessicated corpse near the gem, which turned out to be Franskie's. The adventure warned him that though the gem wasn't a Worldstone shard, it would likely be dangerous if Cultists were looking for it. Franskie didn't listen and went to grab the gem.[1]
Gerlach is enthralled by the spirit within the gem
Unfortunately, the gem had a spirit within it, which tried to possess Gerlach. Luckily for him, his companion freed him and broke the gem.[1]
