"The halls of the Fractured Plane play host to an eerie disposition. They somehow feel different...or perhaps it’s always felt this way. You'll never know for certain."

The Fractured Plane is a recurring seasonal event in Diablo Immortal.

Lore[]

"The Fractured Plane may be a reflection of your mind, but...for many, there is no greater hell."

The Fractured Plane is a "shattered reflection of the mind."[1] It has been described as a plane of cognitive mirages whose halls bear an eerie disposition.[2] While the Plane appears to be a very real place, it is implied that it appears differently to all those who enter it. Some minds are crushed by such an act.[1]

At least two individuals are known to have entered the Plane. The first was Zoltun Kulle, who entered it through the magic of the Sumina Glass. Centuries later, this process was repeated by the Shard-seeker, with the aid of Deckard Cain and the Curator. Cain advised them that while entering the Plane carried risk, it could aid them in their fight against Diablo.[1] Eventually, they were able to unshackle their mind from the realm.[3]

Gameplay[]

"In a place like Sanctuary, even those with the utmost mental fortitude can find themselves lost to the unrelenting darkness spread by the Burning Hells. Broken. Shattered. Trapped in the deepest recesses of their mind—entering the Fractured Plane is the only way forward."

- Event description(src)

Fractured Plane consists of a 9- or 12-floor gauntlet. Standard mode has 9 floors and Hell mode has 12. Standard mode must be completed to unlock Hell mode. Players enter without their usual gear, gems, and skills. Instead, they are provided with a pre-selected class, set of skills and affixes (e.g. summon damage increase). As players progress, they earn Chaos Coins. Unstable Legendary Items may be obtained either from equipment racks after clearing regular monster rooms or from the merchant, and the items received complement the skills the player is given. When the session ends, all the collected gear will vanish. Gear may rank from 1 to 5 stars. A higher star rating means higher base stats, as well as more Legendary and Magic Attributes.

In addition to Legendary Items, Charms may also drop, as a guaranteed drop from the bosses on floors 3 and 6, as well as floor 9 in Hell mode, and with a small chance from other floors. The charms are not removed at the end of the run, but are kept until the end of the season. These charms can rank from 1 to 5, and have a number of attributes matching their rank. A charm can have the same attribute multiple times. The possible attributes are:

  • +1 Resurrection
  • +10% bonus Chaos Coins
  • +10% chance for Gem Essences to drop from monsters
  • Recover 10% of max Life upon clearing a room
  • +1 Fortune Rating
  • Blessing effects increased by 30%
  • +1 Free Refresh at the Chaos Broker
  • +1 Equipment Rack option

Affixes may be active during Fractured Plane, e.g. Adrenaline Rush increases move speed by 50% for a short time after killing a monster.

Each floor of the Fractured Plane consists of various rooms linked by bridges. Players must beat the current room and then step on one of the circles at the end of a bridge to activate the room on the other side. It is possible to complete all rooms on a floor this way, but the player is free to move on to the next floor after completing the final room that contains a portal.

The rooms can be of the following types:

  • Monster room: the most common type, may contain regular, Elite and/or Rare Elite monsters. Monsters may have Elite abilities (e.g. Sniper or Bad Blood). After defeating the monsters, an equipment rack appears with a choice of 2 random pieces of equipment or an amount of Chaos Coins.
  • Cursed Chest room: contains a chest in the middle with a Chaos Coin counter. Once the chest is touched, the counter starts to go down and various monsters spawn. The player must kill the monsters as quickly as possible. Once all of them are killed, the chest drops the remaining Chaos Coins as well as a Legendary Gem essence that provides a buff for the remainder of the run.
  • Chaotic Altar room: contains an altar in the middle. Touching the altar gives the player a choice between 3 buffs, which may include regular buffs such as increased damage and dodge chance, to powerful ones such as set item bonuses and Helliquary Boss Magic attributes.
  • Treasure Goblin room: contains numerous Treasure Goblins that run away once they are attacked. The player must quickly chase them down and kill them before they can portal away. Each Goblin killed drops a large amount of Chaos Coins. The normally harmless goblins are affected by Elite abilities which harm the player.
  • Merchant room: appears as the first room of every floor after the first one. Contains a Chaos Broker that sells items and Fortune upgrades for Chaos Coins. Fortune upgrades increase the rating of equipment found in the Fractured Plane and cost an increasing number of Chaos Coins every level (30 for level 2, 60 for level 3..., up to 270 for level 10), with the maximum being level 10. The four random pieces of equipment can be re-rolled for 30 Chaos Coins. The price of gear depends on its rating: 30 (1-star), 60, 120, 300 or 500 (5-star). Additionally the room contains a healing spring that heals the player for some Chaos Coins. This is the only reliable source of healing (other methods include very rare healing orbs dropped by monsters, the Vithu's Urges blessing, the charm attribute that heals on completing a room, and any class-specific skills that heal if they happen to be available).
  • Boss room: the only room (besides the merchant room) on every 3rd floor. Contains one of the Rift Guardians. On floors before the last, defeating the boss spawns a Chaotic Altar, granting a choice between 3 buffs.

One of the rooms is designated as the final room that spawns a portal to the next floor on completion. Warping to the next floor converts all unequipped items into Chaos Coins.

Players have a limited number of resurrections per run in Fractured Plane, 5 by default. After exhausting the resurrections, they must restart from the beginning.

Rewards[]

Chaotic Chests containing random gear can be obtained by completing floors 3, 6 and 9. These chests can be earned repeatedly. Furthermore there is once-per-season reward for completing floor 9 (separately for Standard and Hell mode) which offers a choice of one of 6 Legendary Items.

History[]

Fractured Plane was introduced in Season 13. Before the September 21 2023 update, the number of floors was 15 instead of 12, Challenge Rooms had a lower chance of appearing, and Chaotic Chests could only be obtained once.

The October 25, 2023 update added the Legendary Gem Essences from Cursed Chests and the Set Item bonuses from Blessings.

The March 20, 2025 update made various changes to Fractured Plane:

  • The distinction between Standard and Hell mode was introduced, with Hell mode retaining the old 12-floor format and Standard having only 9 floors.
  • Originally, players used their current class (except for the special editions promoting new classes) in Fractured Plane although with a pre-selected set of skills. After the update, the class is pre-selected and is the same for all players.
  • The floor layouts were changed, with earlier floors having fewer rooms and later floors having more.
  • Originally, the reward chests were awarded after floors 4, 8 and 12. These were changed to 3, 6 and 9 (including Hell mode, despite it still having 12 floors).
  • Originally, the last floor completion reward consisted of selecting six out of all the Legendary items encountered during the run and receiving one of them at random.[4] The update changed this to a selection of one of 6 Legendary Items.
  • Originally, each piece of Legendary gear had only a base stat and a Legendary attribute. After the update, gear can have multiple Legendary and Magic attributes based on its star rating.
  • Charms were added.
  • Elite abilities were added to monsters (e.g. Sniper, Ice Wave or Bad Blood). These are indicated by a pop-up when entering the first room after the starting room on a floor.
  • The location of the portal is marked on the map and a directional indicator was added, allowing players to skip optional rooms.
  • The prices at the Chaos Broker were changed. Shards of Fortune and low-rating Legendary Items decreased in price, while high-rating Legendary Items increased in price.
  • Helliquary Boss Magic attributes (similar to those found on Vanguard gear) were added as possible blessings.

Crimson Plane[]

"Every Blood Knight must accept their days roaming Sanctuary with sentience are numbered. While Fernam’s ritual will suppress their physical transition into an unholy abomination for a time, the battle to stay human is also fought mentally. Two halves of a troubled mind exist in conflict. Entering the Crimson Plane may be the only way to retain harmony."

- Event description(src)

With the release of the Blood Knight class, a version of Fractured Plane called the Crimson Plane was active, between July 13–August 2, 2023. During this version of the event, the player's build was that of a Blood Knight instead of one for their current class.

Darkling Plane[]

"After witnessing adventurers under mental duress, trapped in the deepest recesses of their mind, some of Sanctuary’s Familiars ventured into the new Darkling Plane to rescue them."

- Event description(src)

On the launch of the Splintered Souls update, a version of Fractured Plane called The Darkling Plane was active, between Dec 14-28 2023. During this version of the event, a random familiar was selected for use every time the player started the Fractured Plane.

The Deluged Plane[]

On the launch of the Unending Storm update, a version of Fractured Plane called The Deluged Plane was active, between May 23 and June 13, 2024. During this version of the event, the player's build was that of a Tempest instead of one for their current class.

Development[]

The Fractured Plane was originally a limited-time event. It was introduced in 2022, and ran again from January 16, 3:00 a.m.–February 6, 2:59 a.m. server time.[5]

The event was created to invite players to try new skills and Legendary items that they might not typically use. The developers wanted to provide players with an opportunity to start from scratch to see how well they can play their class no matter the circumstances.[4]

Trivia[]

This section contains facts and trivia relevant to this article.
  • That the Fractured Plane is randomized via gameplay could be considered a form of synergy with the game's lore. As the Fractured Plane appears differently to all who access it, similarly, its layout is different for each player.
  • The lore implies, but never actually states that the Fractured Plane is not a physical realm, but a mental one.
