"The library's entrance isn't far...In all honesty, we've never been inside. There were too many warnings. It seems even the Horadrim feared Zoltun Kulle's domain."

The Library of Zoltun Kulle

The Library of Zoltun Kulle (a.k.a. Zoltun Kulle's Library) is one of the repositories of Zoltun Kulle.

Lore[]

"It is said that demonic aberrations lurk within the Library of Zoltun Kulle, a vast chamber of knowledge hidden beneath the sands of Kehjistan."
Zoltun Kulle's Library2

The library's interior

The library is located in the deserts of Kehjistan,[1] either in or on the boundary of the Shassar Sea.[2] It is filled with the types of traps that Kulle would normally employ,[3] replete with powerful artifacts and the many traps that are there to keep them out of prying hands.[4] A copy of Zoltun Kulle was created by the Wizard to serve as the library's curator.[5]

The library's entrance was apparently kept hidden by magic,[2] and its defenses powered by a central core.[6] Golems were created to serve as its protectors.[7]

History[]

Early History[]

"Terminus Connection 1001: Failure. I can waste no more time on this potential array. Humanity's salvation awaits. If I must consign this Library to rot to save mankind. So be it."

The library's depths

The library was the first of its kind that Kulle established. He constructed it alongside a series of unique constructs he built to endure the shifting sands. His primary focus was the physical strength and obedience of the constructs, not their adaptability.[8]

Kulle kept a journal which detailed the library's inner workings. He conducted a number of "unfortunate experiments" which resulted in the creation of monstrous creatures.[9] He also conducted teleportation experiments via terminus devices.[10]

At some point, the Horadrim breached the library as part of their efforts to defeat Kulle. The Horadrim were defeated and resurrected as his slaves.[11] Kulle eventually abandoned the Library and moved to his archives. As he was not able to get a terminus to connect between the two facilities, he bitterly resigned the library to rot.[10]

Kulle later met his end by the Horadrim.[12] Over time, the library fell into disrepair.[13] Its central core shut down,[6] and monsters overran the library. Kulle's Golems were steadily destroyed over time, and couldn't keep the monsters in check.[14] Additionally, a number of Golems became wild and uncontrolled.[7] Furthermore, wards went up that prevented the Curator from gaining access to certain sections of the library, and despite his efforts, he was unable to breach them.[15] The constructs Kulle created still continued their tasks centuries later, despite the library crumbling around them.[8]

The existence of the library was known to the Amber Blades. However, aware of Kulle's reputation, they stayed clear of the structure.[2]

Recent History[]

When the Worldstone was destroyed, one of its shards crashed into the library. Five years later, a group of thieves entered the library hoping to make a big score. Unfortunately for them, the Coven had also arrived, hoping to retrieve the shard.[4] The Shard-seeker later found the library with the help of Peth;[2] they had come to find how to destroy the corrupted Worldstone shards, already in the possession of Deckard Cain.[16] However, they found that everything was trying to kill them.[4] This included Kulle's duplicate, who attacked them, believing the intruder(s) to be thieves, despite their protests.[17] He was defeated, and they explained that they weren't thieves, but rather, sought a way to destroy the Worldstone shards. The Curator stated that if Kulle knew of a way, he would have stored the information in his private archives. However, given his weakened state, he couldn't reach that location. He had to regain his strength, and ordered the hero(es) to clear the library of the creatures that infested it.[13] Having proved their worth, he led them to the central core to reactivate it. However, upon their arrival, the Curator found her was unable to reactivate it. He sent the hero(es) to find Kulle's journal, which detailed the library's inner workings.[9] Upon their return, the Curator discovered that they needed essence to reactivate the core. He bid the hero(es) travel to the Chaos Engine to extract the essence of Golems, in order to reactivate the core.[18]

At round about this time, the Sand Scorpions broke into the library in search of treasure.[19]

With the core reactivated, the wards that had prevented access to certain sections went down.[15] Subsequently, the entire library came under the Curator's control, and he gave the hero(es) leave to come and go as they pleased in the future.[20]

Later Events[]

Note: The following events aren't necessarily in chronological order.

The Curator managed to regain control of a number of Golems, but others still remained wild and uncontrolled.[7]

Now that the library had been opened to the world, it attracted a number of hapless adventurers, along with the Sand Scorpions. While some of them pillaged the archives, others lay in wait for hapless explorers. Peth of the Amber Blades requested that adventurers remove them.[21]

At some point, Peth himself ventured into the library, but found it had been invaded by Ghouls. He requested that adventurers remove the Ghouls from the library, as he dared not set foot inside again until the monsters had been removed. Furthermore, in doing so, the library's archives would be protected from the Ghouls' ruthless scavenging.[22] The Library was also invaded by imps, drubs, and golems.[23]

After obtaining the Scepter of Fahir, the Amber Blades declared war on the Sand Scorpions, but were forced to retreat into the library. In the ensuing battle, both Tabri and Vataos were apparently killed, leaving both factions leaderless.[10]

In-game[]

The library appears as a zone in Diablo Immortal.[24] Its entrance is located in the Shassar Sea zone, available after completing the Shassar questline. It has a recommended Character Level of 35-41.

Tomes can be found outside the library, and if enough are collected, it unlocks a secret level. The secret level varies in its content.[25] Enemies can be fought here from across the series's timeline.[26]

Zones[]

Development[]

At BlizzCon 2018, it was stated that the heroes of Diablo Immortal came to the library to find its Worldstone shard.[4] In the final version, they come to the library to find how to destroy the corrupted shards.

  • The name of the library varies in-game. When approaching the library from the Shassar Sea zone, it is called "Zoltun Kulle's Library." Once the player enters the library however, the zone designation switches to "Library of Zoltun Kulle." The wiki has gone with the in-zone name.
