Putriddefiler

A Putrid Defiler

Putrid Defilers are monsters encountered in Act V of Diablo II.

Lore[]

Putrid Defilers are vile, loathsome beasts. Not only can they viciously attack using their razor-sharp forelegs, they reproduce at will by silently hovering near an unwary demon and parasitically infecting it with Pain Worms.

Defilers were part of Baal's Army of Destruction, and struck fear into the army's own troops.[1]

In-game[]

All Putrid Defilers variants are counted by the game as Act Bosses and so have their bonuses, also they use their own levels on Nightmare and Hell instead of Area Levels.

Putrid Defilers have the Impregnate (or Putrify) ability, which causes Pain Worms to spawn out of the affected monster after death.

They commonly flee when approached by danger but attack if they have nowhere to escape.

Development[]

  • As their random color generation is disabled in the files, their Uniques and Champions can't have random colors, but they would look like this if they did. (Click on the small image)
  • Putrid Defilers have an unused yellow-green color palette.
  • There is also an projectile graphic named "pdteleportmissile", suggesting that they were planned to teleport.
  • They have two instances of an unused animation "S2" (Special 2), that shows them becoming darkened for a moment, it might have been planned as some sort of invisibility or the unused projectile spawn animation.
  • They have an unused sound titled "zap.wav", in it they can be heard laughing with an electric sound. Furthermore in the MonSounds.txt file they have this sound assigned to the Skill2 column, which means it would play when this special cloaking animation happened.
