Encroaching Shadows is an Act II quest in Diablo IV, initiated after completing Dark Omens. It is one of three quests that becomes available after said completion, alongside Feral Nature and The Spreading Darkness. Completion of this quest triggers Exhuming the Forgotten.
Objectives[]
- Search for evidence of Lilith near Braestaig (Donan spoke of Lilith sightings near the home of Airidah, the elder druid. I should investigate the nearby town of Braestaig for clues.)
- Search for evidence of Lilith in Braestaig (Donan fears Lilith may have set her sights on Airidah, elder druid and watcher of the north. I should investigate the nearby town of Braestaig and speak to the knights he sent here.)
- Speak with Chieftain Asgail
- Speak with Yorin (I learned that fog and spirits have descended on Braestaig from the northern hills. The druid watcher of the north, Airidah, has not been seen since the bedlam began. Yorin, Donan's son, says he can take me through the Weeping Cairns to reach the druid's domain. Perhaps I can find more answers there?)
- Find the entrance to the Weeping Cairns with Yorin
- Speak with Yorin
- Defend Yorin and defeat the incoming spirits
- 'Defend Yorin outside the entrance to Weeping Cairns
Transcript[]
- Chieftain Asgail: Wood will bend like grass in the wind when the spirits arrive. Physical barriers will not be enough.
- Knight Omas: And your talismans and dirt scrawling will give the dead greater pause?
- Cutscene
- Chieftain Asgail: You picked a fine time to visit Braestaig, wanderer. The whetstones are singing. Hearts are pounding.
- Chieftain Asgail: Sweet music for a red day.
- Class: Donan sent me.
- Chieftain Asgail: Huh, at least you're not a Knight Penitent.
- Knight Omas: At least? It is us who protect this village with our lives.
- Yorin: Let it be.
- Knight Omas: (sigh)
- Chieftain Asgail: There's an ominous fog uphill. Mad spirits emerge from it. They'll be here shortly.
- Chieftain Asgail: Are you here to help us ward them off?
- Class: I seek a demon who passed through.
- Chieftain Asgail: So...that's what it was.
- Chieftain Asgail: (sigh) Well, this day keeps getting better, doesn't it?
- Chieftain Asgail: The demon went uphill, to Airidah's domain.
- Chieftain Asgail: But unless you want to join the spirits, I wouldn't go there. It's best you stay with us.
- Yorin: I can lead you to Airidah.
- Knight Omas: Out of the question.
- Yorin: I'll be safe. Donan put his trust in this traveler. So shall we all.
- Yorin: Tell us when you're ready to move.
- Cutscene ends
- Knight Omas: Mind what lurks in the fog and return as soon as you can.
- Knight Omas: Donan will have my head if anything happens to you.
- Class: Let's go.
- Yorin: The roads are thick with fog, so the fastest route to the hills is east, through the Weeping Cairns.
- Yorin: You look like someone who's seen the world. Hope I can do the same one day.
- Class: What's holding you back?
- Yorin: (sigh) My father. You've seen how he is. I need to persuade him just to let me leave the bloody keep.
- Yorin: Are those...bodies over there?
- Yorin: I see the entrance to the Cairns below.
- Yorin: There should be a path to the east that will lead us there.
- Yorin: That's the entrance to the Cairns ahead.
- Yorin: Wait...why is the passage blocked?
- Yorin: (sigh) It's sealed, but there's writing.
- Yorin: They look like old druid runes...
- Yorin: The song of wind...the howl of...
- Yorin: Oh, no. They're coming.
- Class: Hurry.
- Yorin: All right...
- Yorin: (Speaking Druidic)
- Yorin: It's a chant! The chant will open the way.
- Yorin: Light protect us.
- Yorin: Hold them off!
- Yorin: (Speaking Druidic)
- Yorin: (relieved sigh) It worked.
- Yorin: Something's rousing the spirits from their rest.
- Yorin: We should make haste within.
Optional Dialogue[]
- Class: Tell me about Airidah.
- Yorin: She's a legend. One of the druids who fought alongside my father to defeat Astaroth. I was raised on stories of her wisdom and courage.
