The Elder Rift's entrance
The Elder Rift is a gameplay feature of Diablo Immortal.
Lore[]
- Deckard Cain(src)
According to Deckard Cain's research, he suggests that the Elder Rift is of Nephalem origin—specifically, the creation of Daedessa the Builder. It was built by an ancient society as a combat trial to test the prowess of its warriors. The portal of the Elder Rift leads to a place not on Sanctuary. Though it contains creatures and terrain that appear native to Sanctuary, the combinations of the two are discordant, with creatures appearing in the wrong habitat.[1]
Accounts from adventurers that braved the rift say that their journey abruptly ended after facing a powerful entity— a kind of simulacrum of some known horror from Sanctuary.[1]
History[]
The Elder Rift pre-dates the founding of Westmarch,[2] where it was recovered from the Heart of Corvus.[3] Its existence was known of, but for much of the city's history, the Rift was apparently inactive. By 1270, however, Westmarch's Royal Mages had made a breakthrough in the activation of the device involving crests.[4] Permission was given to merchants to sell crests to adventurers to enter the Rift. Unfortunately, every adventurer who entered the Rift failed to survive the experience. This changed with a hero/group of heroes who entered the Rift, survived, and brought tales of the treasures and horrors they'd encountered to Jondo Mouren. Overjoyed, Mouren declared that business would boom once word of the treasures inside the Rift spread, unworried by the countless adventurers he'd previously sent into the Rift to die.[3]
Gameplay[]
The Elder Rift is similar to Nephalem Rifts from Diablo III. Using crests, players can stack up modifiers for the Rift to amp up the challenge – and the rewards. The Elder Rift can yield both runes and legendary gems.[5] Eternal Orbs also act as modifiers.[6]
Overview[]
The Elder Rift is a replayable dungeon that can be completed in a few minutes. The layout of the Elder Rift is random and can be set in one of five styles: Dungeon, Stalactite Caves, Crypt, Shassar Library and Burning Hells.
- Rare and Legendary Crests can be used to add modifiers to the Rift.
- Modifiers can help or hinder both characters and monsters.
- The number of modifiers is determined by the highest number from Crests among everybody in the party.
- Each player can contribute 3 crests in any combination. Furthermore there is an option to add 7 more crests, bringing it up to 10 total. However it is not possible to freely mix and match the 7 crests, they are taken according to the selected priority. If the player doesn't have enough crests to add the full 7, they are prompted to buy more from the shop.
- When using Rare Crests only, it is possible to use 100 at a time. The prompt to do so appears after selecting 10 Rare Crests. This still only awards 10 Fading Embers to other party members, but awards all the crests' worth of Fading Embers to the player.
Fading Embers
- Every Crest awards Fading Embers to every member of the party.
- Bring your Fading Embers to the Fading Ember Trader who sells runes and Legendary Gems.
Rift Modifiers[]
Rift modifier change the gameplay by buffing/debuffing the player/monsters, or by adding feature to the Rift that aid/hinder the player.
Legendary Crests add 2 modifiers each to the Rift, while Rare Crests add a single modifier each up to a maximum of 6 total modifiers.

Mirrored Jewels[]
During certain limited-time events, Mirrored Jewels can be activated before entering the Elder Rift. Typically this can be done only once per event period. When activated, all Legendary Gems dropped in that run drop an extra copy. The extra copy is always bound and has random quality for 5-star Legendary Gems.
Priority Drop Rates[]
Whenever a new 5-star Legendary Gem is released, there is a window of 3 weeks during which a setting can be enabled for Elder Rifts that increases the drop rate of the new Legendary Gem, making it drop 50% of the time a 5-star Legendary Gem drops.
During certain limited-time events, Priority Drop Rates can be activated before entering the Elder Rift. This allows you to select exactly 8 5-star Legendary Gems. There is a limit of 900 rift attempts with the selection enabled. The counter increases for every crest used, even Rare Crests, which have no chance to drop the selected gems. The effect of using this feature is described in a conflicting manner in different sources: the patch notes claim that every 5-star gem has a 60% chance to be one of the one of the 8 selected, while the in-game description states that their drop rates are increased by 150%.
Another type of altered drop table is the exclusion drop pool, where a certain number of gems (e.g. 8) can be chosen and those gems will not drop at all. This was used for the event between October 16 and November 6, 2024.[7]
With the launch of Shattered Sanctuary, a modified drop pool was available between December 13, 3 a.m. and January 8, 2025, 3:00 a.m., where players could choose 15 each of 1-star, 2-star and 5-star Legendary Gems, and only those would drop.
Training mode[]
Elder Rift training mode is available by talking to the Training Aide in the Training Grounds. In this mode, it is possible to choose any of the five rift styles, toggle invincibility, clear any status effects, and restart the level. There is no way to add modifiers. There is a level timer, but no rewards are given for completing the training.
History[]
Originally, the "Add 7" feature was only usable for Legendary and Eternal Legendary Crests. The ability to use it with Rare Crests was added in the March 30, 2023 update.
The Chain Reaction, Combo, Crusher, Instability, Flurry, Rampage, Minefield and Endless Treasure modifiers were added in the September 21, 2023 update.
The January 31, 2024 update added the crest priority feature.
The ability to use 100 Rare Crests was added in the April 2, 2025 update.
Training mode was added in the June 19, 2025 update.
Trivia[]
- The reward chest at the end has a different glow depending on the reward. The basic glow is yellow with a few thin rays projecting up and only slightly flickering. A more violent flickering with thick diagonal rays indicates that a Legendary Gem is about to come out. If the rays turn white, it indicates a 5-star Legendary Gem.
