"Azmodan created the demonic hellflyers after he nearly lost to Tyrael in battle thousands of years ago. The angels made glorious use of their great luminescent wings to outmaneuver the demon host and assail its commander. Frustrated by his near defeat, Azmodan began breeding winged demons capable of tearing the angels asunder."

A Hellflyer

Demonic Hellflyers (a.k.a. Winged Moloks or Firewings) are a special breed of winged demons, encountered in Act III and Act IV in Diablo III.

Hellflyers are support attackers of the Army of Sin, outflanking enemy quickly and attacking from unexpected direction. They are fragile, but may 'deep strike' by descending from the sky over 2 seconds anywhere on the battlefield (once they descend, they may not lift off again). While descending, they can be damaged and even killed (even before they are actually visible).

They can also be seen swooping down on human soldiers and carrying them away. Sometimes they break through the roof, getting into the Keep Depths.

In combat, they may attack in melee with their claws (if cornered), but prefer to spit fireballs that deal average Fire damage. A Firewing subtype uses a breath attack (similar to that used by Oppressors). In Act IV, they often bombard the battlefield with fireballs, but these are scripted events and not the actual attacks.

In Act V, Banished Firewings briefly appear in battle with Belphegor.

Demon Hunters can call upon Shadow Beasts which look like pitch-black Hellflyers to cast down Rain of Vengeance.
