The Defiled Crypt is the name of three dungeons in the Cemetery of the Forsaken in Act I of Diablo III. All three can be explored, but two are "false", as only the "true" crypt holds the crown of King Leoric within the Chancellor's Tomb that makes up its third level. The second level is very small, serving as a fight area for Manglemaw, who guards access to the tomb. The false crypts only have one level.
The entrances to all the crypts are randomized between four possible doorways in the Cemetery. There is no way to tell which is false aside from exploring them, unless a bounty has been offered to complete an event or kill a monster in one of the crypts, in which case that entrance will be marked on the map.
In every game, one of the two false crypts will be medium sized and contain either the Jar of Souls or The Matriarch's Bones event. Dataminer, a unique Ghost monster, sometimes appears there as well. The other false crypt will be small, but occasionally the unique Digger O'Dell, a Resplendent Chest, or the Cursed Chest of the Plunderers can be found inside. The "true" crypt sometimes houses Uniques John Gorham Coffin or Drury Brown, in addition to Manglemaw.

Trivia[]
The "true and false" instances of the Defiled Crypt follow a pattern shared by the Passage to Corvus later in the game (which has 3 false instances), and Tal Rasha's Tomb in Diablo II (which has 6). In those cases a mechanism is available to determine the true instance before entering it.
