Transcript[]

Core[]

  • Caliem: The demons came disguised as members of the Imperial Guard. They controlled our minds, drained them to create their illusions.
  • Aleran: I wonder what happened to my son...
  • Caged Prisoner: Help us! You can’t leave us here!
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Of course not. I shall free you.
  • Caged Prisoner: I owe you everything!
  • Caged Prisoner: I can’t believe it’s over...
  • Caged Prisoner: I thought rescue would never come.
  • Caged Prisoner: The gods have answered my prayers.
  • Follower
    • Templar: Don’t worry about us! Go!

Class

    • Necromancer: The moment of your death draws near.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Now she rots.
  • Follower
    • Templar: Another triumph for righteousness. Let the wicked tremble!
  • Ending Cutscene
    • Necromancer: Caldeum is still in peril. Before she died, Maghda revealed that Belial’s treachery goes even deeper than we suspected...[1]

Townsfolk Dialogue (Hidden Camp)[]

  • Enchantress: I knew what he was the instant I beheld him. But being in his presence makes me quite nervous.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: He is our ally.
  • Enchantress: We do not deserve it. Tyrael sacrificed all he knew to aid us...I hope it is worthwhile.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: What happened to the rest of your family?
  • Class
    • Necromancer: So you both turned to thieving.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: You were constantly at odds, then?
  • Scoundrel: Not as much as you might think. Until the end, that is.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: You and your brother chose different paths.
  • Scoundrel: We’re not much alike, really. He was always dependable and practical… a complete bore, I’d say.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: And you committed yourself to a life of crime.
  • Scoundrel: Hardly! I was just amusing myself with the Thieves Guild. It was nothing serious.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Your brother had no objections?
  • Scoundrel: That may have been serious.
  • Covetous Shen: The Jewel of the East! Caldeum is really quite amazing. I have never seen anything quite like it, and I have seen so many things in my life.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Certainly you have been here before?
  • Covetous Shen: That explains quite a bit, actually.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Has anything changed?
  • Haedrig Eamon: Last time I passed through here was soon after meeting Mira. She wanted to stop and see the city, but I convinced her to travel on. My good memories of Caldeum feel like I’m watching someone else’s life. I’ll be glad for us to be gone.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: How did you meet your wife?
  • Haedrig Eamon: It’s actually quite a tale. We met in a town not far from here, on the outskirts of Kurast. She was...Well, you’re not going to believe it...she was...locked in a cage.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: Your wife was a criminal?
  • Haedrig Eamon: No! They were going to burn her as a witch.
  • Class
    • Necromancer: That is a crime here, isn't it?
  • Haedrig Eamon: Let’s talk about this another time.
  • Kala: I stayed outside last night. I tried to ignore the silence, but the empty air felt like an open mouth above my head. Eventually, I realized I had to sleep. If someone was going to kill me, I was already dead. I hadn’t slept that well in years.[1]

Townsfolk Dialogue (Caldeum Bazaar)[]

  • Villager: Do you see that armor? No wonder he/she destroyed those cultists in Alcarnus so easily!
  • Villager #2: I can’t believe anyone could have survived that out there, let alone defeat those monsters.
  • Villager: I know, but he/she did it.
  • Nobleman: Damius, is that you? What happened?
  • Nobleman #2: Thieving peasants! They came while I was sleeping, pinned me down, and cut off my robes and jewelry!
  • Nobleman: I’m so sorry, my friend. Come, stay with me. I am sharing a tent with a fine and generous family.
  • Nobleman #2: Oh, no! I am staying where the guards are. You wait and see. That peasant family is going to slit your throat and rob your corpse.
  • Refugee: Life in the Borderlands was hard, but we had our dignity. We came here for help, and how do they treat us? Like animals!
  • Noblewoman: I am Lady Netharaz! Let me back into the city this instant!
  • Villager: We will die out here if you don’t let us in!
  • Noblewoman: There must have been some mistake. I am a favored member of the emperor’s court!
  • Noblewoman: I will faint dead away if I stand in this heat a moment longer!
  • Villager: Why does the emperor keep us out here in the filth?
  • Noblewoman: Perhaps a bit of coin would change your mind?
  • Villager #2: Demons ravage the deserts. Our villages are overrun!
  • Villager: Our homes are destroyed, yet you do nothing!
  • Villager: The emperor must listen!
  • Villager: We need to be within the safety of the city walls.
  • Villager #2: We’ve been out here for too long! You must let us in!
  • Villager: I wouldn’t go over there if I were you. Some poor fellow fell to his death from the walls.
  • Villager: Alcarnus is being destroyed by the Coven! I’ve seen people skinned alive!
  • Noblewoman: From the sculpted skyroads leading to the imperial palace, one can see all of breathtaking Caldeum below.
  • Iron Wolf Swordsman: Breathtaking? Before the gates closed, I saw three rats and a starving child fighting over half an apple.
  • Noblewoman: It pleases you to exaggerate, I’m sure.
  • Iron Wolf Swordsman: No, it pleases me to pass out drunk in the shade. But here we are.[1]

Quest Log[]

  • Part 1
    • Barbarian: At last, the road to Alcarnus is clear. Maghda cannot delay her death much longer. I will tear the town apart to find her. Deckard Cain, your vengeance is near.
    • Crusader: The road to Alcarnus is clear, and Maghda will soon find herself face to face with me. Then Cain will be able to rest in peace.
    • Demon Hunter: Even from afar, I can see the smoke rising above Alcarnus. It was obvious that Maghda was shaken by my words in the Khasim Outpost. She knows that Belial has abandoned her...and she is afraid.
    • Monk: There is nothing left the Coven can do to keep me from Alcarnus. I have broken the cultists’ deceptions. Now only their lives separate me from Maghda, and I will take them.
    • Wizard: Alcarnus. It seems like an eternity since I set out from Caldeum to find it and to find Maghda, but finally the road is clear. The last time I went to Alcarnus, it was a sprawling desert town. I fear to think what Maghda has done to it.
  • Part 2
    • Barbarian: I am surrounded by slaughter and butchery. The bodies of innocents and everywhere, and their blood runs in rivers on the streets. Maghda has more than Cain's death to answer for.
    • Crusader: Maghda has massacred the residents of Alcarnus. I did not need more reasons to hunt her down, but I have them anyway.
    • Demon Hunter: Alcarnus is a ruined city. This is the fate that New Tristram would have suffered if I had not intervened. Corpses line the streets, strewn carelessly, while blood stains the ground. The smell is horrifying, and the air is choked with filth and decay. There is no doubt that this is Maghda’s work, and now she will pay for it.
    • Monk: Never before has my task seemed this clear. I am surrounded by an abomination. What Maghda has done is unspeakable—the deaths of so many, their bodies strewn about like refuse. Maghda will die. Her master, Belial, will die. I swear it by the gods. I swear it to those who perished here.
    • Necromancer: Maghda has truly left her mark on this town… It is not a favorable one.
    • Wizard: I have seen my share of horrors, but nothing I have seen compares to this. Maghda and her coven have turned Alcarnus into a charnel house. Decaying corpses are piled along the streets; blood runs in the gutters; and the screams of the dying can be heard everywhere. The smell is unbelievable—rancid and foul. Maghda will pay for every last life she has taken.
  • Part 3
    • Crusader: It is done. Maghda is dead and the world is a better place. Cain and so many others can rest easy now.
    • Demon Hunter: Maghda is dead. It won’t bring Deckard Cain back, but if Leah is anything like me, she will sleep a little easier at night. I must return to the camp and begin searching for Belial. Tyrael should have uncovered some information about his whereabouts by now.
    • Monk: Maghda is dead. That I have done, but a greater enemy awaits me; her master, Belial, Lord of Lies. I must return to Caldeum and hope that Tyrael has learned something, or else it will fall to me alone to tear away the veil of deception that hangs over this land.
    • Necromancer: There is no grave foul enough to suit this corpse. I will let it decompose in the sun until nothing remains but bone and sinew and shriveled skin. Meanwhile, the others should know that she is gone.
    • Wizard: Maghda is dead. I feel no joy, only a grim satisfaction. Cain, I hope that her death brings you peace, my friend.
