For the variant of Nephalem Rifts, see Challenge Rift.
"They call it the Challenge Rift. Apparently, it connects to strange realms filled with monsters. Adventurers are already competing with each other to see who's the best at killing the things."

Lore[]

"The Challenge Rift is a mystical realm used only by the bravest adventurers to hone their skill, obtain rewards, and of course, earn bragging rights."

- Anonymous(src)

The Challenge Rift is activated from a statue inside Westmarch. It leads to strange realms filled with monsters.

Inspired by the successful activation of the Elder Rift, the Royal Mages were able to activate the Challenge Rift. Adventurers started entering the Rift, competing with each other for kills. They brought the rare materials they found inside to Charsi's Smithy.[1] Only the bravest adventurers entered the realm, earning them everything from loot to bragging rights.[2]

Gameplay[]

Similar to the Elder Rift, the Challenge Rift is composed of randomized dungeons with a time limit. The player has a certain amount of time to defeat enough enemies and defeat the boss for a chance to place on the regional leaderboard. There are numerous levels of Challenge Rifts, each with a higher Combat Rating requirement. Levels 1-100 are open from Hell I difficulty, while levels from 101 onwards are open from Hell II.

Description[]

  • Challenge yourself to climb the Challenge Rift rankings!
  • Challenge Rift difficulty will increase the higher level you reach.
  • Receive rewards upon successfully completing each Challenge Rift level for the first time.
  • Whether solo or in a party, successfully completing the highest Challenge Rift levels with the best times will secure your place on the Challenge Rift leaderboards.
  • While in a party, all party members can enter the highest Challenge Rift level unlocked among them.

The Challenge Rift is a seasonal event, with a new season starting every 10 weeks. Progress is not wiped, but an end-of-season reward is sent out and the new season will feature additional levels (typically 50) and the difficulty of the existing levels is re-adjusted.

Rewards[]

Challenge Rifts are the primary source of Cryptic/Enigmatic Crystals, which are the upgrade material for secondary equipment. Levels 1-70 reward Enigmatic Crystals, while 71 and above reward Cryptic Crystals.

Notes[]

  • Completing a Challenge Rift in a party will unlock all levels up to the level completed. When completing the highest unlocked level alone, the next level is unlocked, and up to 10 levels can be unlocked based on your performance. The ability to unlock multiple levels is first active when completing level 6.
  • Completing a level solo will also send the rewards for up to 9 previous levels that haven't been earned (e.g. completing level 110 will give the rewards for levels 101-109). This does not apply in a party.

History[]

In the Unending Storm update, Challenge Rifts were condensed from the previous 600 to 200 levels. Levels 1-100 were aligned to Hell I difficulty while 101-200 were aligned to Hell II and higher. The reward change from Enigmatic to Cryptic Crystals was set at level 71.

In the September 11, 2024 update, the following changes were made to Challenge Rifts:

  • The recommended Combat Rating is shown when selecting a level
  • Blacksmith spawns at the end of the Rift
  • Maximum number of level skips increased from 4 to 9 (i.e. they can be done 10 levels at a time)
  • Buttons were added to quickly jump to the start and end of the level list
