"The sun fades. The moon bleeds. It is the epoch of Dhasocth Iyadur."

- Catarag the Strangling Sun(src)

Catarag the Strangling Sun is a member of the Voidwound.

Biography[]

"Mortal tricks and magics wane. The hunger for the void is endless."

- Catarag the Strangling Sun(src)

Catarag's crowning in the Black Abyss left behind a burning shadow that swallows up light. When it rose on Sanctuary as a smear on the sun, a circle of Sharval witches barely confined the demon at the cost of their lives. Centuries later, it seeks to bring about a shadowed age where the void of its birth can consume sun and moon, Heaven and Hell.[1]

Like all the Voidwound, Catarag was reshaped by the primordial ages it spent in the Black Abyss. It—along with the rest of the Voidwound, arrived on Sanctuary at the five corners of Sharval Wilds.[2]

When one of the Witch Circles of Sharval tried to treat with the Voidwound, Catarag alone did not deal. Instead, it struck at the sun in the sky and aimed at the moon and roared of its Dhasocth Iyadur: a time without light. In return, the Untameable Wilds circle drew Catarag to their glade where they battled it. Once defeated, seven witches poured their lives into wards to keep Catarag bound. At a latter point, Catarag was relocated to the Voidwound Cage.[3]

Centuries later, the wards around their prison was damaged by the Cult of Terror, which allowed the Voidwound to awaken within their prison. When Nisza went to inspect it, Catarag taunted her about the fading wards, and showed eagerness for a reenactment of Dhasocth Iyadur. Catarag was later killed by the combined forces of the the Shard-seeker, Nisza and Westmarch's soldiers.[2] Its paw was sealed within the Helliquary.[2]

Combat[]

Phase 1
"You will witness."
Ambush Catarag

Catarag drops from above

After defeating the demons residing in the Starless Shrine, Catarag drops from above. In this phase, it attacks solely with fire.

  • Fire Bolt: Catarag shoots 6 fire bolts from its mutated hand. This is the basic attack for this phase.
  • Meteor: Catarag waves its sword in the air, and summons a meteor to the player's location.
  • Summon Minion: Catarag summons Demon Warriors.
  • Bomb: Catarag shoots 8 orbs from its mutated hand into the air. The orbs land at random places around the arena, charge for 2 seconds, then explode. The explosion scorches the ground for 12 seconds.
  • Totem: Catarag slams the butt of its sword on the ground, summoning 2 spectral maws that revolve twice while spewing fire bolts.
  • Spear Cage: This is not used to attack the player, but to trap Nisza so that the minions can attack her.
  • Leap: Catarag leaps to the player, causing damage and knockback.
  • Nova: Catarag shoots 3 rotating beams around itself.
Phase 2
"I am the only light.
Burn anew."
Catarag Ignite

Catarag ignites his sword

At about 65 of its total life, Catarag stomps the ground, causing knockback but negligible damage. It then ignites his sword. In this phase, Catarag adds melee to its combat, which deal higher damage.

  • Slam: Catarag slams its sword on the ground, creating 3 fiery rifts that travel in a straight line. This is the basic attack for this phase.
  • Sweep: Catarag charges its sword before making a powerful swipe, releasing an explosion that causes knockback.
  • Nova: The Nova now releases 6 beams. During this period, Catarag summons it's minions.
    • Nisza will create an ice ward. Stay within it to escape the flames.
  • Leap: Same as in the previous phase
  • Berserk Charge: Catarag charges a short distance while making wild slashes.
  • Minefield: With a stomp, Catarag summons multiple rocks the crash down. The rocks are dormant until they are hit by any of Catarag's attacks, after which they explode along the cardinal directions. The explosion of a mine can set off another mine.
  • Blast Wave: Catarag slams its mutated hand to the ground, releasing a blast wave in 3 cones.
Phase 3
"We leave nothing."
Catarag Lava

Catarag summons lava

At about 27.5% total life, Catarag leaps to the center of the arena, then causes lava to seep from the edges. This created a continuously shrinking circle available for the player to move about. If Nisza is still alive, she clears the lava after a minute. If not, the player has to kill Catarag before everywhere is submerged by lava. Catarag uses most of the attacks of the previous phase, but at higher damage and Attack Speed.

  • Slam: Same as in the previous phase.
  • Sweep: Same as in the previous phase.
  • Leap: Leap is now repeated thrice.
  • Inferno: Same as in the previous phase.
  • Blast Wave: Same as in the previous phase.
  • Summon Minion: Same as in the previous phase.
